Re: Happy Springterval, everyone
What's with all these furrin gods then? Ostara is the one true spring deity and she's British. Well, Anglo-Saxon at least.

[quote]Existing SE London property owners, fed up with disappointing returns on their investment, can do something about it while simultaneously signalling how virtuous they are, by signing this 38 degrees petition to stop a proposed high rise development in Catford [quote] I assume you are employin...

Rarely do I eat takeaway Chinese, but we really fancy one for tonight. Any recommendations for something good please.

Re: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year thread
Broke my bloody arm haven't I. Fell over the dog. Just had fracture reduction and plate at Lewisham Hospital. Let me home last night. Just coming down off the morphine so it hurts. But A&E were lovely- apart from the hatchet-faced nurse Ratchet on triage, and the surgical staff yesterday were wo...

Re: Cryptic message on Twitter re Late Knights/Beer Rebellio
I was at their place in Brighton last weekend, again a old tired pub that they had taken over. It was fantastic. Good beer, and not cask-jacket cooled like in some of their other establishments. And really good grub. One of the best burgers I've ever had, though the deep-fried battered gerkin was pr...
Re: Logs
Sorry Robin. Not really a suitable rejoinder on my part for Town Cafe. I hope I can recover your valued esteem somehow.Oh dear, how disappointing. I've always admired Sparticus's posts and have thought of him as a kindred spirit. But now I see my idol has feet of clay.
Re: Logs
Be careful, Lewisham is a smoke free zone. It's an offence to produce smoke from a chimney, furnace or boiler. http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/e ... fires.aspx Unless you use smokeless fuel or have a wood burning stove that is HETAS approved for use in Smoke free zones, you could get a £1000 ...
Logs
I need a new source of logs for our open fire, to be delivered. My usual source has closed his business. Any recommendations please.

I expect it was a Muslim.
Re: WG Grace
A statue on the Cobbs Corner roundabout would be a great idea. We could have a competition as to which famous resident of Sydenham should be so honoured. I don't think a cricketer, however illustrious, trumps Ernest Shaclketon, or Elenor Marx, or my particular favourite, a statue to the building wor...

Golden Lion
It's such a shame. There is lots of examples from the likes of Antic to show how to use these large old pubs in a creative way that brings the punters in. But you have to get it right, and unfortunately the Golden Lion just misses the target. I can't see that it's making money and I fear it will end...

Re: Overground???
According to local news last night in a feature about TfL taking over suburban routes into Liverpool St, SE London is next on Boris' wish-list, so maybe soon all surface trains stopping at Sydenham will be "Overground"

Re: Parliamentary Election Hustings
The point has already been well made. For better or worse we have a 'representative' democracy- we vote for someone to represent us in parliament, and for me, whilst I would never compromise the possibility of a Labour victory, other things being equal I want a representative whose views more or les...

Re: Parliamentary Election Hustings
I have voted Labour in every general election since 1970 and I have been a member of the Labour Party in previous residence. I desperately want to see the back of this cruel, dishonest and partisan bunch of incompetents, the worst and most right-wing government since the war. But I have decided, aft...

I knew Fred was a bit of a plutocrat but the hunting angle is a new one on me so thanks for that, more ammunition when I argue with my left wing friends about the iniquity of the hunting ban. Of course beagling was a much more democratic affair, though some public schools and Oxbridge colleges had t...
