Re: New plans for Calabash of Culture site

A significant proportion of lamb and chicken sold in the UK is halal, some estimates put the proportions at 51% & 30% respectively. All the major supermarkets publish their policies on halal meat as do the major fast food chains such as Nando's and McDonalds.. McDonalds don't use halal meat, Nan...

Re: Fox in house

I saw a fox in the garden last summer. About 2 seconds before it was spotted by my (quite large) Jack Russell terrier. The fox managed to scramble under the fence and release itself from the dog which had it by the throat. I doubt it survived. The dog was pretty mental for a week afterwards. So, get...

Re: Disease carrying slugs hit Sydenham

https://www.express.co.uk/news/nature/718783/slug-disease-pets-spreading-warning It's those bloody foreigners again! There are at least 25 species of slug found in the UK. Most of them are potentially vectors for lungworms. Lungworm is a nasty and potentially fatal disease of dogs but monthly appli...

Re: Bell Green: Planning Inspectorate Public Enquiry announc

Interesting piece in today's Guardian about Lidl and other supermarket chains wanting to open lots more stores in the London area and getting past local authority planning by building stores with affordable flats above. I imagine Aldi could be just as receptive if it meant that they would get the go...

Re: New St Christopher's Charity Shop

To open in the old betting shop on the corner of Newlands Park. I for one think that St Christopher's is an outstanding Hospice and Charitable organisation and I fully support their cause and good work. However Sydenham is now a high street of Charity Shops, Estate Agents and Pound Shops. It seems ...

Contaminated fuel

My partner filled up her old Audi A4 with petrol at the filling station at the bottom of Kirkdale- on the left just before the roundabout- and said that it was a "bit lumpy" on the way home. The following morning the car failed to start. It turned over happily but the engine wouldn't "...

+1. I thought the second act was a bit baggy too, but overall it was highly enjoyable. Some excellent performances. Great that the space is being used. only gripe was the horribly uncomfortable seating.

Re: Been to The Greyhound yet?

My partner and I went it recently and it is a nice place. However, after spending £13 on two drinks - which even for London is quite expensive and not even sitting down for a minute at a non-reserved table for 2, a member of staff came up to us and told us we were in the food seating area and if th...

Southey Street Brewery

Anyone know the current situation regarding the Southey Street Brewery Tap? It was closed for refurbishment and we were promised longer opening hours but there’s nothing recent on their website.

Re: Been to The Greyhound yet?

But. I have to say, I've been to plenty of gastro pubs that actually feel like pubs, for example, locally, The Golden Lion, The Westow in Crystal Palace, or The East Dulwich Tavern on Lordship Lane. The Greyhound feels like a restaurant with a bar area. I think some people on this forum are far too...

Re: Been to The Greyhound yet?

Give me strength! We've waited for years for the Greyhound to re-open, it turns out to be better than most of us expected, decent beer, good food, a pleasant space to sit in, and friendly helpful staff. And it's only been open for a couple of weeks and already the moaners have started. I'm sure the ...

Re: Sydenham Society

This reminds me of the Monty Python sketch- our friends in Longton Avenue (Upper Sydenham) look down on us in the Thorpes(er....Middle Sydenham) and we look down on the benighted denizens scurrying around in the festering wen that is Lower Sydenham. Yes, I've said it, I live in the Thorpes, that cit...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Good size footprint but would guess slightly smaller than The Dolphin. It looked like the conservatory area was being used with drapes around the walls. Good to see it was well attended - no seats available - approx 7 prams and seven dogs complete with trailing leads. Unfortunately from a hygiene p...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Well, I admit that, on the basis of my visit this lunchtime, any reservations I might have had were unfounded. It's a lovely space, much bigger that you'd imagine from the outside, light and airy, and when the conservatory is completed it should be even better. A good range of cask beers including t...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Just for clarity, I didn't say there were a 'dearth of pubs serving decent beer' in Sydenham. My point was that some focus on food, some don't. What I actually wrote was " Despite Lee's assertion, there is a dearth of pubs selling decent beer in Sydenham" it's all in the comma! Of the pub...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Thanks for the links. I wasn't knocking anything, merely asking a question. Despite Lee's assertion, there is a dearth of pubs serving decent beer in Sydenham since the late lamented Beer Rebellion closed (and I'm a fan of the poodle Club so I'm not knocking that either) so I'm hoping the Greyhound ...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

No information about the beers that will be on offer. As it's billed as a "Public House" that's kinda worrying. Looks like it will be very much "food-led" which is how things are these days, but will it be the sort of place that you'd feel comfortable having a couple of pints wit...

It would be a brilliant site for one of the new "local" Co-ops. Just a thought!
