SE London’s Biggest Arts & Music Spectacular

There is just over a week until the sixth annual Sydenham Arts Festival.

Running for 16 days it features some of the best in music, as well as Britain’s top talents in poetry and spoken word.

As well as the four part community musical about World War One, Till the Boys Come Home, on Saturday July 5 Sydenham high street will be hosting five fantastic free hours of live music, dance, street performance and global food stalls, at three locations – with our launch event Street Celebration (11am-4pm).

Check out some great Jazz, folk, classical and hip hop, including Ronnie Scott regulars Michele Drees Jazz Tap Project and SAF favourites Balalaika, with their lively Russian folk.

Alex Carter’s will be sharing her prolific vocal abilities with Exotic Holiday, a selection of vintage music from India, Russia and China on Thursday 10 July and Age of Opulence - will bring a recital of richly-textured solos and duets evoking Parisian chic, the roaring twenties and Edwardian sentimentality, against a selection of songs chronicling the carnage of war, on Wednesday 16 July.

An all-male production of Bizet’s popular opera CARMEN opens on Wednesday 9 July and analogue electronica specialists Metamono will bring a stunning audio visual experience to audiences on Sunday 6 July with Secrets of Nature: Sounds Unseen.

Award-winning folk and blues artist Ian Siegal is playing live on Friday 11 July, supported by the wonderful Carrivick Sisters with their ‘formidable instrumental skills’ and Sean Taylor, with his ‘articulate compelling songs’.

Following its success last year, Canadian import Colors of India will be back celebrating the vibrant culture of this Southern Asian nation on Thursday 17 July with a ‘bigger and better’ show, the Incredible Sax Band will be sharing their eclectic style on Sunday 13 July and the South London Jazz Orchestra will be Swingin’ Sydenham again on Friday, 18 July.

Younger audiences can explore the delights of classical music at Toy Symphony’s workshop and concert on Saturday 19 July and for the more advanced in age there is Puccini’s Tosca on Saturday 19 July.

SAF’s musical finale takes place on Sunday 20 July with Arts in the Park family fun day and Arts in the Park Extra, with headline act South-East London’s own rock superstar Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze fame and his band the Fluffers and Queens of Lovers Rock multi-award winning singers Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson.
