Sydenham School major demolition and reconstruction

Post by Robin Orton »

As a neighbour of the school, have just received notification of this application for planning permission. Details at http://acolnet.lewisham.gov.uk/LEWIS-XS ... mkey=66969 Comments required by 30 July. Haven't taken it all in yet, but it involves new four storey buildings, new vehicle and pedestrian entrances, a new car park for 60 cars (apparently on an existing grassy area), new sports courts, two external amphitheatres, new external lighting and the removal of 19 trees (although 29 new ones are promised.)

Would welcome anyone's views and comments.

I was just thinking the other day that the 60s(?) style blocks looked well past their use-by-date, so, without looking at the detail, it seems positive to me.

Juliet
Past their sell by date. We do not want demolition for demolition sake it all costs money which we have not got.
I remember the block being built.

Seems to me we are losing a lot of green areas.

I do hope they bring back cooking as girls now mostly have no idea .

Maybe some of them are too busy running companies, becoming doctors and lawyers and generally proving themselves to be smart and capable to subscribe to the outdated idea that women are only to be valued by their looks and cooking skills. GROW UP and stop trying to hijack this thread.

Back on the original topic, I remember thinking that I would find it depressing to be taught in those blocks.

We don't want a CrossRail situation either.

That should have been built in the 1980s at a cost of 19% of today's figure...

Do it now, get people working, paying tax, having pride, less people claiming,

So many wins...

An open evening was held on 11th June in Sydenham School when staff from the planning department of Lewisham Council were available to discuss the plans in situ. As a close neighbour of the school, I am very pleased with the plans - the huge concrete monstrosity is to be demolished (it permanently blocks my light and is ugly to look at daily - in my opinion...) and a four storey building will be erected in its place but will be built closer to the original school building. The land where the brutalist building is at present will be landscaped. There will be many new amenities for the students and staff and the whole thing looks to be very well thought out.

After viewing the plans and speaking to the planners, I came away with a feeling that the staff/pupils/neighbours will all benefit from these plans. I do hope that lots of other people feel this way too.

I wish I'd known about this. Does anyone know how it was publicized?

Sorry if I offended you. You misunderstood my intention. Of course ladies are in all the professions you mention, but this does not mean they should not be able to cook.

All I said was seems a shame that will lose so many trees and green areas.

It is a girls school, so wouldnt really expect Eagle to mention boys and cooking.

I don't think so,
Like you , my daughter is a career woman, but she is a good cook,
Its a fact of life that a lot of the previous generation have not passed on the skills that their mother would have passed onto them,
This could be own to the fact that many mothers or fathers ( lets not sterotype) are far too busy trying to earn a crust,
Personally,I would much rather have been a stay at home mum like my mother was, but economics did not allow this.
I,m sure Eagle would not deliberately try to upset the boards females.

Thanks Annie you are quite correct.

Of course Forest Hill Boys should also partake in cooking lessons , but we were not talking about that school.

I am glad to hear it rshdunlop , they did not regretably in my day.

Still see loads of FH Pupils scoffing pies on the 75 back to school after lunch. Great shock how overweight some of them appear.

I share a flat with 2 guys aged 20 and 27 - neither of whom can iron a shirt or cook a meal (unless you count microwaving or reheating chilled/frozen foods). The lack of basic skills taught to both genders is a concern, I hope things are improving now.

Who should we blame or that? School or parents or both?

Mainly parents I think but with back up from schools.

Just as you would expect all children to be taught to read by Mum and Dad , you would expect parents to teach their children how to do basic cooking and housework.

Funnily enough Eagle! I agree with you! Haha,it should be part of the fun of being a child, cupcakes, ricecrispie cakes etc,
Anyway better get back on topic,
Will the old front of Sydenham school be retained? I did look briefly at the plans but I busy thinking what a fantastic new build,at least thats the way it looks on paper,it must be exciting for the new children who will have state of the art facilities.

It appears that the original 1917 block is to be retained, with some 'reconfiguration and refurbishment.'
