Sydenham Society #rebuildthegreyhound Update

Post by Sydenham Society »

I'm delighted to say that we have now reached 1,160 signatures on the Rebuild the Greyhound Pub petition (727 online and 433 on paper). The numbers will shortly be given a boost once the petitions are returned to high street traders and at the market this Saturday where we hope to continue to collect more signatures.

Although things may appear to have gone quiet, a great deal is happening behind the scenes. The core group who were elected at the Golden Lion meeting have been busy. We met last week to discuss strategy and tomorrow afternoon we are meeting Lewisham's Chief Executive Barry Quirk and head of planning John Miller.

The Greyhound site is key to the regeneration of our high street and there is high demand from new businesses who want to move onto the site. The commercial agent for the businesses to the rear and side of the pub remains highly bullish about retaining two key businesses who are ready to start trading as soon as the pub is completed. And we have been approached by a number of pub chains and business owners who want to run a pub on this site. Curiously, they all tell the same story - that they constantly contact the commercial agent (Acorn Commercial) yet never hear from the owners!

Sydenham Society #rebuildthegreyhound Update

Post by Sydenham Society »

Five members of the Rebuild the Greyhound pub core campaign group met Lewisham’s Chief Executive, Barry Quirk, and John Miller, Head of Planning on Wednesday October 8th. Barry Quirk was anxious to reassure us that getting the Greyhound rebuilt was a key priority for the Council. He informed us that a legal letter had been sent to Purelake stating that the Council will consider taking enforcement action if Purelake fail to respond within 14 days, stating their intention to return to the site. It was agreed that members and senior officers would maintain contact with the Sydenham Society.

I’d ask Purelake to seriously consider returning to the site as soon as possible to complete the work in order to avoid lengthy and constly legal action. The core campaign group are willing to talk to Purelake at any time in order to put them in touch with pub groups who we know are interested in running the Greyhound.

The next key event is the Mayor & Cabinet meeting on 22nd October, where an update and report will be presented by officers.

The next key event in the Rebuild the Greyhound Pub Campaign is the Mayor & Cabinet meeting at Lewisham Town Hall at 6pm on Wednesday 22nd October, where an update and report will be presented by officers. Please join us on the steps of the Civic Suite at 5.45 before going in to the meeting – which is open to everyone.

Details of the report can be found at http://councilmeetings.lewisham.gov.uk/ ... 9&MId=3425 (pages 14-25 are relevant to the Greyhound).

Two weeks ago LBL sent a legal letter to the pub owners asking them to set out a detailed schedule of when they intend to rebuild the pub. If Purelake fail to respond within 14 days, the Council will start legal action against them.
The key passage of the report to be presented on Wednesday warns the owners that:

“Due to the unsatisfactory state of the site, and the significant time that has passed without the Deed of Variation having been signed since the outcome reached at the April 2013 Committee, they are requested to provide officers with a detailed schedule setting out their proposals for compliance with the provisions of Schedule 10 of the S106 Agreement. If such details are not submitted within an agreed timescale, the Council will seek to commence appropriate legal proceedings against the owners of the site to ensure compliance with the S106 Agreement.”

I would ask Purelake to seriously consider returning to the site as soon as possible to complete the work in order to avoid lengthy and costly legal action. The core campaign group are willing to talk to Purelake at any time in order to put them in touch with pub groups who we know are interested in running the Greyhound.

This is a recording of tonight's Council Cabinet Meeting presided over by Mayor Steve Bullock. It also features Sydenham councillors Chris Best and Liam Curran and Head of Planning John Miller.

Sorry about the quality but its the words that are important. Listen out for what the Head of Legal interjects @4:05.

Thanks Admin for putting up this recording of last night’s Mayor & Cabinet meeting. It’s well worth viewing if you’ve got a few minutes to spare! The upshot of the meeting is that the Greyhound’s owners have replied to the Council’s legal letter stating that they intend to rebuild the pub. The Sydenham Society welcomes this outcome but in our view there is still a long way to go. We have, after all, been in this position before!

Some key quotes from last night’s meeting are as follows:

At about four minutes in, the Head of Law, Kath Nicholson, says that “the legal foot won't come off the pedal”; and Cabinet Member Cllr Chris Best, Chair of the Sydenham Assembly, says that she hopes to be able to report to the next Sydenham Assembly meeting on Saturday December 6th that Purelake have returned to the site. The Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, welcomed the letter but said that if progress isn't made then the matter will have to come back to Mayor & Cabinet for further consideration.

The Sydenham Society will today write to the Mayor and Chief Excecutive asking them to lay out a clear timetable for meetings and discussions between Lewisham’s planners and the site owners which in one month will result in a programme of work with the developer back on site in December.

Let’s hope that this is the breakthrough that everyone in Sydenham has been waiting for.
