Tube to Sydenham?
Yes - Transport for London are spending £1 billion
extending the existing East London Line northwards and southwards. Work on part
of the northern section is already under way. Work should start later in 2006
southward and we will be having 8 tubes an hour going through Sydenham on the
existing railtrack. Four go onward to Crystal Palace and the other four onto
West Croydon.
All should be running by June 2010 in good time to be
an essential link for the London Olympics.
This would really put Sydenham on the London Transport
Map. The effect on house prices and rents could be quite dramatic for what is
now one of the most inexpensive areas in inner London.
The basic plan for the southern extensions is to build a
short link from the tube line to enable the tube trains to continue to run on
the South Central railway lines. |

Update from ELLP 05/01/06
As we enter 2006, the project continues at pace. The
project remains on schedule to be delivered by June 2010 in accordance with
Olympic documentation.
Construction: Repair and replacement of 21 bridges
along the Kingsland Viaduct began in May 2005 and remains on schedule to finish
in the autumn of 2006.
Status of contracts: Bids for the £500M main works
contract will be returned to the project on 31 March 2006. Once evaluation has
taken place, the successful bidder is likely to be announced in the summer of
2006 and begin work in autumn 2006.
Proposals from four train manufacturers arrived today
and will be evaluated to determine who will be chosen to provide Rolling Stock
for the operational railway. A decision will be made at Easter 2006.
