This year's Open House London, the
Capital's largest architectural showcase, is taking place on 20-21 September.
This years event will once again reveal the fabric of London in all its
diversity: opening eyes and minds to the architectural gems, contemporary
design and areas of urban change that define the city today.
Sadly no buildings are open in Sydenham. However, there
is a splendid opportunity to raid our neighbours Forest Hill and Honor Oak who
have three great buildings on show:
Horniman Museum Aquarium 100 London Road,
Forest Hill SE23 3PQ. New aquarium facing the challenges of building a
sustainable eco-system in the basement of a museum. Architect Buttress Fuller
Alsop Williams, Year 2006. Tours Sun at 1.45pm & 3.15pm, pre-book ONLY by

The Capitol 11-21 London Road SE23 3TW. Sat
10am-5pm/Sun 10am-5pm. Formerly Capitol Cinema, Grade II listed rare survival
of a complete 1920's cinema in Art Deco Egyptian style, later a bingo hall and
now a Wetherspoon's pub. Built 1929, Architect Stanley Beard. Regular
architectural tours including behind-the-scenes to largely untouched first
floor area. Pre-book ONLY on 020 8291 8920. Last tour 4pm.
Walter Segal Self Build Houses 8 & 10
Walters Way, Honor Oak Park SE23 3LH. A close of 13 self-built houses. Each
house is unique and built using a method developed by Walter Segal, who led the
project in the 1980s. Architect Walter Segal Year 1987. Sun 12noon-5pm. First
come basis, queuing outside if necessary. Last entry 4.45pm.
