Getting to IKEA or
Wimbledon could become easier with the coming of Croydon Tramlink to Crystal
Palace Park. This major extension to the existing network is now out to
consultation and could be carrying passengers by 2013.
Sadly because most of Sydenham lies just across the
border in Lewisham and not in Bromley or Croydon - we don't get notified of
this major development to our own Park! However, you can take part in the
consultation by going along to the Exhibition at Upper Norwood Salvation Army
Hall, Westow Street:
- Friday 10th November, 11 am to 8pm
- Saturday 11 November, 12 noon to 5pm
The proposed tram route will leave the Beckenham branch
at Harrington Road (near Norbury Junction) and either join or cross Anerley
Hill at the railway bridge near the end of Thicket Road (the road that runs
around the Penge side of the Park). This seems to be a done deal. What the
consultation appears to be really about is how it gets up the hill to Crystal
Palace Parade. There are three option:
- Option 1: Along Anerley Hill itself. This would cause
the removal of parking and loading bays for local shops.
- Option 2: Follow the railway to the station and then
through a cutting in the Park to the bus station.
- Option 3: A combination of 1 (as far the road junction
with the station) and 2 through the Park
The extension plan also appears to be interlinked with
the East London Line Extension to Crystal Palace and the greater London
Development Agency (LDA) plan for the takeover and regeneration of Crystal
Palace Park itself. The LDA's previous plan to replace the current swimming
pool complex with a new centre based on the athletic stadium has hit the
buffers. English Heritage's have refused demolition of this listed NSC building
despite the wishes of the public when consulted on this issue.
So I guess we should be happy that TfL want our
