Re: Moving to Sydenham

The point of my "thin" evidence is that it was so bad 30yrs ago I upped and got out . From my regular reading of the moans groans and complaints on here, and the odd trip down Kirkdale and Sydenham road via google street to marvel at the variety of fastfood joints, closed pubs and shops, graffiti, tr...

Re: Moving to Sydenham

while some of those trying to 'scare' people away were rather thin on the evidence I, & my family, have all moved away from SE26 where we were born, how is that 'thin' evidence? and back then the crime rate was nothing like todays. How many of those who are here extoling the virtues of SE26 have li...

Re: St Philip Neri school redevelopment

I knew that site when it was just a huge hole in the ground after bomb clearance, I got into that hole at the age of 4 and had to be rescued by a passer by. Make of that bit of trivia what you will, kids playing in the street these days, far more dangerous than a bombsite. Bombsite were always cover...

Re: Moving to Sydenham

Oh dear, you really had to scour the dregs of the internet for that didn't you? Im not actually in Newbury, its our postcode sweetie. But I'll meet your Reddit scourings of some internet sourpuss with this..........https://www.police.uk/metropolitan/00AZ03N/crime/stats/ which is a teeny bit more reli...

Re: Moving to Sydenham

before paying too much notice to anything that Milton says, I would click on their name and view previous posts. They belong in a shed along with the other tools... If Milton wanted to stay away from Sydenham so much then I would question why they insist on constantly coming here and posting tripe ...

Re: Moving to Sydenham

I was born in Sydenham,Adamsrill road, 72 years ago. Lived just off Kirkdale from the age of five till 1970. Moved to the fringes of SE26 at the end of Newlands park, went to schools in SE26, got mended at the childrens hospital, ran a business in SE26. I got out in 1988, went back once for a funeral...

Re: Best Breakfast in Sydenham

Can no-one in SE26 cook themselves bacon eggs and sausages in the mornings then? £10 quid for that? or 50 quid a week? assuming 5 days out the week you are paid too much. '£200 per month you could get someone to come to your house and cook it and still be quids in. cheap bacon, unidentified sauages,...

Re: Noise in Lower Syd last night

but you are in Newbury. Says it all. you should be here on race days. Can't move for discarded champers bots and lost stillettos heels. anyway I was in Sydenham, but I got out when diversity was coming into fashion. I'm perverse, not diverse. I had had enough when at 2.am I could feel not hea...

Re: Noise in Lower Syd last night

Its just weekend revels, people unwinding in the summer after a weeks hard work. Leave them be, it's a diverse multicultural city and different cultures and the entertainment they bring should be embraced. I'd have gone along and joined in, especially if the drink was cheap. Can't beat a drink and a...

Re: Fox in house

Be careful around "fearless foxes", they may have mange which is infectious to people and dogs. Curiously, one of the symptoms of fox mange is that the fox loses its natural fear of humans. I had a mangy fox once take up residence in the outside cat box my semi feral cat lived in. I see this fox is d...

I suppose it is cruel.
Better to poison them, stamp on them or cut in half with a spade.?

Re: Disease carrying slugs hit Sydenham

Sprinkle it with salt, or pour some down the hole. Dead in seconds.

That said I've never seen a slug come out of a hole.
Where I live I have some that look like pork sausages they are that big.
Also note that some slugs actually prey on other slugs.

Re: Contaminated fuel

It may not be the garage to blame. Modern "eco friendly" fuel contains a lot of Ethanol which is hydroscopic, meaning it attracts water; this water will settle in the bottom of the fuel tank. Owners of older vintage vehicles such as myself have found endless problems caused by this such as corrosion...

Re: Montie Garrard, Kirkdale

I knew this chap when I lived nearby in the 1950s/early sixties. His shop was like a film set of musty dusty stuff that never seemed to change. How he paid his way I have no idea. You are correct about him being the organist at CP and I recall the organ pipes at the back of the shop although I can't...

Sydenham and District motor club

This was a very active club between the wars which , organised and partook in all sorts of events for two and four wheels.

Has anyone any info on it?

I would particularly like to find one JC Thyne who rode, and was quite successful with, a Grindlay Peerless sidecar in a lot of events.
