Re: RIP LA Fitness
The decision to close the pool at the Sydenham Pure Gym branch wasn't specific to Sydenham. Pure Gym have taken over all LA Fitness gyms and their business model is 'no frills'. That means no pools and no saunas. I don't think any amount of campaigning by the Sydenham Society would force Pure Gym t...

Re: Good doctors in Sydenham?
Actually it is not that easy getting an appointment with the Sydenham Green practice, in fact it is very frustrating. Yes I have the means to book on line - if you are prepared to wait 3 weeks (those being the only two left when I logged on before Christmas). It wasn't an emergency so I'd rather not...

Re: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year thread
It's been a long time coming and a hard slog to get there but I'm sure all affected residents are looking forward to a peaceful New Year now Zanzibar's license has been revoked. Well done to Matt McGrath and his team and all their hard work.
Re: Oh gawd
I have it on good authority - not for much longer. Their license has been revoked thank goodness (subject to appeal of course). Common sense has prevailed with many thanks due to Police Sergeant Matt McGrath of the Licensing Dept and his team.

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
If it isn't going to be a pub then I would love it to become a Real Greek restaurant (currently a small chain) - there are a few in London but not nearly enough IMHO . However looking at the position of their current establishments I doubt whether they would consider Sydenham a prime location. Would...

Re: Christmas lights in Sydenham?
Anyone else notice there are none at the moment? I see Croydon's lights are up and sparkling away and very nice they are too. Mind you if Lewisham Council intend to put up the same old sorry ones we've had for years - just strings of dodgy coloured lights winding around the lampposts then perhaps w...

Re: Christmas lights in Sydenham?
I do agree that it is too early for the lights to be turned on in November but Lewisham usually have them wound around the lampposts by now. Still - if it's a cost cutting measure then I'm fine with that. The ideal place for the Christmas tree, if there has to be one, is on the roundabout but possib...

Re: Major Disturbance Cobbs Corner
Prodding police officers in the chest - surely this amounts to assault? Imagine If the situation was reversed and police started prodding people in the chest - all hell would be let loose!

Re: Major Disturbance Cobbs Corner
Mosy I think you do need to revise your thinking as to whether any damage or injury was caused. As immediate residents who, without fail, get the brunt of anti-social behaviour emanating from this place, we were terrified. At first there was so much screaming and shouting going on we thought that th...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
We have a car (actually 2) but do not use them on a daily basis. I usually prefer to use my Freedom Pass and hop on a bus/train or get the exercise and walk. However being of the 'sandwich' generation we have elderly relatives and grandchildren to visit who are not easily reached via public transpor...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
Yes - I was getting a bit carried away calling them monstrous. Compared to some they are not bad. It took a bit of getting used to as we live directly behind them and lost quite a bit of daylight to the back (bedrooms, kitchens and gardens) of our properties. That's why we objected to the height of ...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
Because it is small - having demolished all those extensions (thank goodness). I worked in there years ago when it did meals, etc and when there was more than one bar and it seemed huge. I think it looks tiny, completely overwhelmed and ridiculous in front of the monstrous flats, which I am glad to ...

Re: Guardian's Let's Move To... feature
Does Sydenham have a totem like obvious spiritual focal point to use? I ask this because I don't know what it is rather than any mischief. Penge has the dinosaurs (they're in SE20) or the Watermans almshouses. S Norwood has the clock tower or the lakes. Upper Norwood has the transmitter or the subw...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
Yes I'm hoping there is no opposition to this conservatory. It will add character to the pub and soften the grim mass of the block of flats. Having been reduced to its original size it is now tiny inside and the pub needs more space if it is going to appeal to any of the big players in the pub indus...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
Yes - getting quite hopeful now. Anyone know if the much disputed Sainsbury's local is gearing up to go in at the rear of the Greyhound? Really handy not to even have to cross a road to buy a pint of milk - however will always get my daily paper at Pete's!

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
Well those buildings shooting up elsewhere in London all have one thing in common - profit - or greed more like. Purelake probably getting a great big fat zero from completing the Greyhound build so why are they going to rush themselves? Not sure where I heard the rumour about Zizzis but it would be...

Oh come on.....really???!!! Give Purelake the benefit of the doubt....don't make me laugh too much     And if the 2 builders are on holiday, what about some more.? They had a lot more builders putting up those crappy flats.....what about some of them....and don't tell me we only...

Ok - keep your hair on - just giving them the benefit of the doubt. Anyway I'd lay money on those two Purelake chaps being on their holidays. Some Builders do close and they definitely close for 2 weeks at Christmas.Steveofsyd wrote:Pathetic and incredibly annoying. Absolute tosh about the holidays!

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?
I thought it was common knowledge that ALL building firms close for two weeks for the summer holidays as is customary at Christmas too.
