Re: Crystal palace north wing

Extremely late reply. But I've not been on here in years. You're correct that is shown in the Phoenix tower but if you look very closely, once the tower has just been completed the North Wing was no longer extant. I'm not sure the exact date it was removed but you can work out from that it was remov...

Re: crystal palace Race Track

Interesting comparison, but I think the one with the tower is wrong. It's definitely the north tower, but the angle of the 'present day' picture would not match up, if the north tower was still standing. I think the original was taken when they had that extra loop in the track. http://gplea.rscsites...

I don't know about the side of the parade, but some of the trees growing out of the North Tower have finally been cut down this week. The only ones left are growing on Thames Water's property.

No the steps don't remain at all, currently that part of the rim is covered in grass and temporary hut is overhanging where they were.

I can get a photo of it from the top, but it is literally just full of mud/earth and trees growing in it.

In regard to the North Tower, the entrance to it was via the North Tower gardens, up some small steps.

Map is slightly inaccurate and moved the position of the North tower up, but just indicating what side it was on.

oh you meant those tubes I thought you meant the pieces of Iron on the top of the bank. Those tubes were possibly part of the lift system in the North Tower. Yes we are excavating and preserving the site otherwise it becomes a jungle. If you look at aerial photos of the site in 2002 you can barely s...

luckily you didn't take the photo of me standing on that tower base. Yes it was the dry wooden floors with years or rubbish underneath that made perfect kindling that helped burn down the palace, also the wind direction helped. In the 1866 fire the wind was blowing the other way which helped save mo...

The terraces and the site of the crystal palace were a car park in the 1960s, not sure if that's the real reason it was flattened.

It's the only one that pops into my head, there are most likely others.

Just have to search photo archives on the internet or libraries and such.

That photo I posted can be found by searching for photos of Bromley, Kent on the Francis Frith website.

Looking through the LDA's conservation plan from a few years ago, which briefly surveyed sites of where different buildings and current ones are. They had one for the aquarium but in another item they also have this: http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/3320/aquairum.png This "unknown" buildin...

The round building was known as the "Panorama Building" was built in 1881 and knocked down in the 1950s/60s. The building was used to display a variety of panoramas, not sure about its later life. Photo of it here in 1911: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff70/boringname_photos/6799-19In...

Crystal Palace Wiki

Been thinking about doing this, might not work out but decided to create a wiki on the Crystal Palace aiming to put all the information and history on it in one place, even modern day history like the NSC.

Can find it here:
