Air ambulance?

I think that a helicopter, quite possibly an air ambulance, landed in Alexandra Park earlier. It came in low and landed at about 16.00 and left at about 17.00. Does anyone know of anything that has happened this afternoon?

Re: The Alexandra to become a hostel?

MikeJ, there is the chain 'hotel' (Premier Inn/Travelodge?) near Ancaster Nissan, although that's a bit of a stroll from either of the Penge stations. I confess that I do feel uneasy about the squeezing in of 16 studios, with shared facilities. I just get the sense that the retention of the bar/rest...

Re: The excellent Billings

Late to the party, but can only echo sentiments about Billings. The guys there are really helpful and Kiran is a bit of a demon fish filletter. We don't go anywhere else for meat and fish now - and their cooked ham is fantastic! Prices are excellent - I'm often surprised by how cheap some fresh meat...

Re: roofer/builder?

A guy called Clint from Penge re-felted and sealed a dormer for us, shortly after we'd moved in. His company was called Claret Roofing http://www.claretroofing.com/ and he did a really good job. Can't remember costs, but would definitely use him again, so couldn't have been too brutal!!

Re: Victorian Fireplace specialist wanted

We used Avalon to replace two fireplaces in our house. For £200 on top of the cost of each fireplace, he removed the old concrete and ceramic tile arrangements, installed the new reproduction cast ones, and made good. He also sold us and fitted a nice bit of slate, as a hearth, for one of them. Only...

Re: Sydenham High Street needs a bike shop

Behind Bars was already gone by the time we arrived in Sydenham, so can't comment. I use Deen's in Beckenham these days and cannot recommend them enough. They're not fussed whether it's a new inner tube or a new bike they're selling, and are always helpful with advice. I think the key to a successfu...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

Better a small pub than no pub. With the demise of The Two Half's, by my count we're down to three live drinkeries on the High Street (although was impressed by the quality of the (admittedly single) ale offering at The Albert down at Lower Syd recently). To my mind, Lewisham should have obtained a ...

Re: Recommendations for Local Doctors

Sydenham Green (Bell Green) have always been spot on with me. Friendly doctors IMO, and whilst previously I've had to wait a few days for an appointment, it's probably been no worse than the average wait time. You need to register for the online service, but I'm guessing it's a time-saver overall?

Re: Decent Hairdressers in Sydenham

Hi Marnz, It's not clear if you're looking for a gents' or ladies' hairdresser. I use Lev at Smart Chaps for a No.2 with the clippers. From what I've seen he's also popular for 'hair art' and wet shaves. I can't comment on ladies' establishments, but most of the shops in the high street seem to come...

Re: Lemon Tree

Thanks HB, we have had a few takeaways from Barakah, and they are very good (including the free 'treats' you often find in your bag). Namaste was also good the last time we ate from there - they seem to have upped their game since their re-fit.

Re: High Street Wishlist

M&S might offer a healthy alternative to take-away eating, but that's something which could equally be provided by a decent independent deli. Agree though that I'd rather see M&S or Waitrose than Tesco or Sainsburys. Also not sure about the environmental argument - from my days (long past no...

Re: High Street Wishlist

I'm amazed by the number of people that include Waitrose/M&S in their lists. Over the past 6 months or so, we have relied more and more on the existing High St businesses, due in full to the attitude of Waitrose Beckenham. Following the (imho) unecessary inclusion of the 'home' section, selling ...

Re: Lemon Tree

I suspect that 'Posh's' comments be taken with the large degree of scepticism they deserve - joined the forum the same day as their only two posts. I've had food from Lemon Tree twice, eat in first, based on the early reviews on this forum, and grabbing a takeaway after an extended evening fr...

Re: NEW OPENINGS, NEW CLOSINGS

Tried the Lemon Tree last night and echo much of what DickP reports. The food is definitely better than the last time I was in Gurkhas (and that was some time ago now). Lemon Tree are obviously trying hard to impress; the manager and staff are very friendly if perhaps slightly inexperienced. Our sta...

Re: Keen cycle nuts in Sydenham ?

In response to G-Man, 14kgs sounds a little heavy. I'm by no means a club level cyclist, but from what I understand, one's own weight has more of an impact than the bike weight, so if you can stay away from the office biscuits.......... I cycle to Victoria from Sydenham - an easy pace to Char...

Re: Newlands Park Murder?

Let's not be taken in by Theresa May's glib 'only 11%' ever being out on the streets at any one time. Such a figure must be counting every Officer's 24/7 and not counting hours off-duty. I wasn't aware of that quote, but take most MP's statistical spoutings with a large pinch of salt. I've been in ...

Re: Newlands Park Murder?

It's so sad and worrying that this has happened to an apparently innocent passer-by. I'm guessing that he resisted an attempt to relieve him of a mobile phone/mp3 player. My thoughts are with his family and friends. It may or may not be a coincidence, but in the past few weeks on several ocassions I...
