Golden Lion 1840/50 Landlord?

Regarding the Golden Lion pub Sydenham, my husbands ancestors used to be the landlords - in the 1840's and 50's or thereabouts. There name was Hardy. Do you have any info on them?

A comment all the way from Aberdeenshire!! I was most interested in your item regarding the Sydenham Safeway, and thought I'd share our experiences from North East Scotland. Like you, all our excellent smaller Safeway stores became "Safeway Compacts" under Morrisons at the take-over, and t...

Crystal Palace Organ

I am insterested in informations about the organ in the Crystal Palace. Would you kindly pass this email to a person specialized in organs? In 1854 a German organ player and teacher developped plans for a monumental organ to the Crysttal Palace; I just discovered these plans. It was an organ with 17...

Crystal Palace Park - Who?

So Sydenham Avenue is in Bromley, eh?

Does anybody know who on Bromley Council
deals with the Crystal Palace Park (i.e., sits on the committee which deals with it)?

In my deceased Grandfather's WW1 papers there is a letter, as I've mentioned, from Sub Lieutenant Warren Barclay RNVR (Nelson Battalion) dated 29 May 1915 from the trenches on Sari Bahr - near Gaba Tepe. This letter was written to my grandfather's parents in Dunedin, New Zealand. My grandfather, Ser...

I found the story of Len George (one of the houses on the Chulsa estate) yesterday. He had been a Heavy Rescue leader throughout the war and rescued countless people but his luck ran out when he tried to save a man trapped at the Elmers End bus garage incident on 18.7.1944 and was crushed beneath a ...

Chulsa Estate House Names - WW2 casulties

I am interested in the names given to the houses on the Chulsa estate. You can find most of them with reference to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They are a mixture of AFS and CD casualties of WWII. There were 30 AFS killed in three incidents in the blitz of 1941. Their names are commemorat...

I have noticed that since Morrisons have taken over safeways the prices have increased. I think this unfair for the elderly people of sydenham who cannot get to the large savacentre at bell green. I do not know how they advertise as being cheaper they are one of the dearest supermarkets. I know they...

Safeways/Somerfields

Re the Safeway report on the Sydenham Town website. Having previously worked for Safeway for 28 years it saddens me to see the way it is disappearing. I am sure however that Morrissons are only finishing the decline started by the Argyll Group when they took over from the American parent company in ...
