I actually find Somerfield very useful, if a bit crappy, but I would be upset if it closed unless it was being replaced by Waitrose or Simply Food! I know it is under-staffed and sometimes the shelves are a bit bare but I was really surprised when I moved here (as I had never lived near a Somerfield...

Dance classes for children
Can anyone recommend anywhere that does dance classes for young children (ballet etc) in Sydenham or nearby (as far as Dulwich)? I think there might be something at the hall in Venner road but don't know who to contact. Thanks in advance

Speed limits
Hi, I just wondered if any of you saw the news today about Portsmouth and the 20mph speed restrictions on residential roads? And they seem to be without speed humps - horay! I suggested this recently to our councillor Marion Nisbett who then forwarded me a letter from the traffic dept at the council...

There are some gorgeous buildings on Sydenham Road and Kirkdale but some are not immediatley visible because of some modern shop fronts which protrude too far onto the street. Which is a shame..

Sydenham benches
Ordinarily I would agree that benches could be useful in a high street - as a rest stop for the old etc - but I don't think anyone else would want to sit on these benches because of who regularly uses them. I have seen them spitting while hanging around there and I don't think alcoholics are known t...

Sydenham road benches
This might seem harsh but does anyone else agree that these should be removed? The ones outside the post office. I have only ever seen alcoholics sitting on them and I use the high street very regularly. If we want to improve the high street and attract more quality businesses the presense of these ...

Sydenham road/accidents
I have only recently noticed just how fast some cars move along Sydenham road at times, esp in the rush hour (only occasionally walk along the high street at this time). If there is any gap at all they accelerate - even more reason to plant trees and change pavement styles etc to try and keep it mov...

I agree. The food in Zucker was ace - especially the homemade cakes. But it was far too small.

East London Line
I could not find the recent thread on this but thought it was important to get this up. There is a campaign to ensure our current train service is not cut back because of the new line. One of the arguments is that the trains are already packed and if they are reduced at all it will be chaos (as well...

Moving to Sydenham
I lived in Honor Oak and Forest Hill before moving to Sydenham (and previously north London) and definately prefer Sydenham. It has more of a community feel and less houses seem to have been converted into flats so people tend to stay for longer - other areas nearby seem very transitory. When I did ...

I just saw that sign myself. Do you think potential bidders are given background info, such as the conservation area status? The people who bid on houses on that awful programme in the morning on BBC1 don't seem to have a clue what they are buying. Some haven't even been inside the properties. I jus...

Apparently they can even order stuff in very quickly if they don't have it.
DIY shop
Hi there. I was just wondering if I could start a mini campaign for locals to stay loyal to the DIY shop on the high street with the new Homebase coming to Bell Green. They are really great in there. For example: I needed plastering sand asap on Saturday and considered going there but thought they m...

I wouldn't want to take the Railway away from its regulars at all. I've never heard anything negative about it and think it's great if someone feels at home enough to wear carpet slippers (although that information did make me laugh out loud). It's just a shame it's a bit run down. I used to go to t...

The Hormiman museum runs courses and I think there are lots of events at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, which are all a short bus ride/drive away. There is also some sort of further education college near Kelvin Grove school , I think (Lewisham council webiste would be best for this). You could try th...

Just read the 'buffet-style restaurant' bit (businesses interested in running a potential new venture at the Greyhound) . It sounds scarily like Harvesters/Beefeater!
