Re: Did you vote?
The thing about local councillors is that many aren't really political. The colour of the rosette isn't always a reflection of their world views. Some people just want to crack on and get things done and backing of a political party is often just a convenient way of getting elected.

Re: Planning application for 18-storey tower block (and more) in central Penge
The new application is for 16 storeys. The only significant other difference from the previous plan, which garnered about 800 online comments, mainly negative, was that this plan includes 2 stairwells. Quite how we can trust a developer that, despite Grenfell, thought they could get away with an ill...

Re: Boundary commission - Sydenham to combine with Dulwich
Missed that bit MikeJ, thanks. So there is hope, but the idea of Beckenham being a marginal is something I'm struggling to get my head around :? That's why the name is so wrong. It's Beckenham and Penge. It's Penge (and Anerley and Clock House) that makes it marginal. Left to its own devices Becken...

The Alexandra - Fund to keep it going
Hi As many of you know this great pub is only yards from the border with Sydenham and serves many of you in normal times. Due to lockdown though, it is currently struggling to survive. It is truly independent and has no pub company to subsidise it. It would be a tragic loss to the community. If you ...

Re: Replacement for Penge Lidl
It opened today. Looks like a local rival to Lidl and Aldi. Mix of big brands and smaller ones and selection of fruit, veg, etc plus household products. It's run by the Penge Food Centre people

Re: Mural?
I can't comment on Sydenham but the street art in Penge has been co-ordinated by a single individual who lives locally - Steve of London Calling blog. His efforts have been widely supported by the local community and he has effectively quality controlled the work that is everywhere with both artists...

Re: What's happened to the Crooked Billet?
It looks just like the Pawleyne further down, which is not surprising as they are both run by Craft Union (an Enterprise Inns subsdiary). The Pawleyne is very busy these days and tbf seems a slightly mre pleasant place to go.

Re: Petition. Lewisham isn't working: end the directly-elected mayoral system now
I wish this campaign every success, BUT if Bromley is anything to go by, it won't make much difference. Bromley doesn't have an elected mayor, but similarly to Lewisham, everything is sorted by the Tory leader of the council and his cabal, and the general council meetings are rather a sham, especia...

Re: Rolling Stones in Sydenham
Bill Wyman was brought up by his aunt in Penge. His autobiography makes much of the formation of the group and the bonding (or otherwise) between members. If he was aware of a Penge connection with Mick I would have thought he would have mentioned it. But I don't remember any mention. Mind you its ...

Re: Rolling Stones in Sydenham
According to this month's Mojo magazine article about Brian Jones and the Stones' earliest period, a schoolboy Mick Jagger spent a year rehearsing with his very first band in a house in Alexandra Road! I can't find anything about this on the web. Anybody know anything more about the Alexandra Road ...

Re: Moving to Sydenham
Penge and Sydenham should be seen as a single area. Few people know where the boundary lies. Then again half the people in Penge state they live in Beckenham! (Kent House Road for example). Your figures do, however, confirm my point. Crime in Sydenham is above average. Given the difficulty reportin...

The Standard hasn't covered Penge in its Homes & Property supplement for 5 years (if you exclud pilfering of the Alexandra Cottages for Sydenham and the dinosaurs for Palace features) . The area has changed significantly since the last time.

Re: Sydenham Market
The Penge Food Hub ( https://twitter.com/penge_food ) are worth checking out in short term while you're waiting for a more local presence. You order the farmer's and local artisan foods on their site then pick up (and have a pint) down the Goldsmiths on a Thursday night.
