Re: Payless, Sydenham

Oddly it was closed most of the day today (Sat) and opened again in the late evening. I've noticed similar behaviour from other "corner shops" recently: it may be that they're opening when demand tends to be highest and closing at other times, either for economic reasons or because of staffing prob...

Re: Payless, Sydenham

Oh, you mean where I walk past every time I want to catch the 176? 0/10 for observation again, then :(

Ah, thank you. I'd assumed it was somewhere else in Sydenham I wasn't aware of :)

Re: Payless, Sydenham

Where *is* Payless? I looked up and down most of the high street the other day when I went along it, but didn't spot it.

I have to say, those symptoms don't sound good, based on my experience elsewhere. Perhaps a word with yer friendly neighbourhood police person, if such exists?

Re: Worst local transport journeys?

I started using Lower Sydenham when London Bridge was out of action. Prior to that I had always avoided it, because I didn't like the walk back from there at night. However, the difference between there and the shockingly unreliable services from Sydenham is so pronounced that I only ever go from t...

Re: Worst local transport journeys?

I must admit, one of the joys of commuting from Elmers End/Clock House was always that you could Get a Seat!

Of course, if you get the right trains from Sydenham, they will be the ones coming from Crystal Palace, which tend to be rather emptier.

That was my reaction, too.

Re: Worst local transport journeys?

I occasionally have to do the 176 route end to end to get up to town. It's not that bad until you get up to the Aldwych and have to do the 2-and-a-half sides of a square thing: Strand, Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross Road, which has been hell ever since Ken redesigned the area round Trafalgar Squ...

Re: A Leaf out of East Dulwich Forum's book?

For me, using a false name is simply a way of making it easier to do something I shouldn’t do. If I want to have conversations that I want to be sure remain separate from my online profile, I do it offline. Sure, that means there are some conversations I don’t get to enjoy, but really, is that such...

Re: A Leaf out of East Dulwich Forum's book?

It does on ours :) It's to make sure that people don't abuse their anonymity by hiding behind it and making highly critical or even potentially libellous comments about other people and institutions. I understand the professional reputation side of things because I have to maintain the same - but th...

Re: LEWISHAM COUNCIL PLANNING ENFORCEMENT DESPAIR

How horrendous for you. I'm so sorry. If you do have a mortgage, then presumably the mortgage provider has a stake in the property and would appreciate hearing about the situation, and might even do something about it? Whether this is the right tactic to use, though, I don't know.

Re: A Leaf out of East Dulwich Forum's book?

Re anonymous posters, I think this is easily solved. Anonymity is important to many people, but it could be seen as a privilege. If people want to make personal comments and aggressive grudge matches, then the moderator could ask them to use their real name, or be barred. I hadn't been following th...

No obvious indications of train disruption, which probably rules out one of the most frequent causes. That aside, I wasn't around at that time, so don't know anything further.

Re: Sydenham Market

Well, if it helps, here are a few of my gripes with the old market: 1) I thought it started too late. I have lots to do on a Saturday, none of them in the immediate vicinity, and am not going to hang around until getting on to midday for things to get going. 2) Being monthly. If you couldn't make it...

Re: Sainsbury's Bell Green

From my own experience shopping at the Penge branch, I'm aware that fewer lines are being stocked: I find myself more and more frequently having to buy from Waitrose in Beckenham even for really basic things. Of course, part of this must be down to the loss of shelving space due to the introduction ...
