Your mention of an environmental audit, ALIB, reminded me that in 1998-9 the London Ecology Unit conducted such a survey of the Millennium Green. Their results were sumarised in "Nature Conservation in Lewisham" published in 2000. One interesting comment from the survey was that "in 1...

Many of us think that there should not be a building of any description (not even a scruffy garage) on that particular site . From the summary of their comments it is clear that the merits or otherwise of the proposed building were irrelevant to many of those objecting to the plans. At the risk of r...

Admin, can you explain why you closed the other thread, and kept this one open? So far this thread seems ill informed and speculative, whereas the other began with full and coherent explanation for the objections to the application from those who were involved. That seems the best starting point for...

One further thing: does anyone know the purpose of the building that lies adjacent to the Palace - a two-storey, victorian brick building? Is this the building you mean? http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3378/3207449631_1e334c0af5_o.jpg It was near the northern end of the parade, and I believe it was ...

Joker, according to Red Alert, a book about the bombing of SE London during WW2, two parachute mines fell on the corner of Dartmouth Road/Cheseman Street on 16 April 1941. Apparently there were 21 deaths and 25 injuries, including six policemen in the police station on the opposite side of Dartmouth...

Not sure, Barty, but I've just remembered that the Local History Centre said they were going to subscribe to it, so you should be able to go there and use it for free:

It is, its been available for a few days at http://www.1911census.co.uk/

However, you have to register to use it and each image costs something like £2.50 to view and copy the original, or about £1 for a transcript.

Unfortunately not, Howard. This is ironic given that one of the most prolific local postcard producers, Ernest William Garland, actually lived and worked in Fairlawn Park (at 26 East Terrace) between about 1905 and 1911. Garland produced hundreds of postcards, mostly of modest terraced houses in Low...

Russell Street is now called Cheseman Street; it is off Dartmouth Road, next to Sydenham School. The picture below shows nos.34-48 during the 1930s. Since then the whole street, apart from no.7, has been redeveloped (click the picture for a hi-res version). http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3414/319668...

Thanks, Howard, I've uploaded it now. The resolution in the book, although adequate, is not really sharp so it's not a great inmprovement on the earlier version.

Let me know if there are any other areas that I should upload.

I agree with your dating of those houses, Tubby. By the time the 1891 census was compiled the whole of the south side of the road was occupied. Yet in the 1887 Kelly's Directory, apart from the houses at either end, only nos. 3, 9 and 23 appear to be occupied. This strongly suggests that the terrace...

Bomb damage maps

Another website ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/yersinia/3061328430/ ) has made the bomb damage maps for London available. Unfortunately they are not of sufficiently high resolution to make out some of the finer detail so I've uploaded the relevant maps from my copy of the book. I'd previously been r...

Thanks, lambchops, I've downloaded the document. It has over 50 pages of detailed advice although, as you say, it all boils down to inbound links and content. PS. I've not been called "grinds" since I was at school, when it was occasionally used in the sense of someone who is "affecte...

The railway line existed, built in 1911, and seems to have been more or less as shown. It was called the "All-Red Route" and took passengers past all the main exhibits representing the British Empire. As every schoolboy knows, the Empire was red on maps. Its route is marked (in red, of cou...

Admittedly it's the owner's own estimate of his house's value. The Zoopla estimate is a little more modest.

The seller has listed the property under his own name (he once owned a club in Brixton) and, of course, may simply be testing the water. I don't believe he has ever lived in the house.

Thanks, Paul, of course I'd be delighted if you could add a link. I'll do the same. In fact, I'm having difficulty getting Google to find my site and would be most grateful if you, or anybody else, could tell me how to improve its ranking.
