I've got that one; it's a press photograph with no date. On the back it says: Famous Landmarks to Feed the Guns Starting the work of demolishing the towers of the Crystal Palace, which will provide thousands of tons of scrap iron. The picture was taken from the top of one of the towers, and shows th...

In the 1901 census most of Crystal Palace Park Road is in the parish of Holy Trinity, Beckenham.

Try searching by record number: RG13/689, folio 186, page 1 takes you to the beginning of the even numbers and RG13/689, folio 189, page 7 to the beginning of the odd nos.

Oh, dear, I should have checked before posting. Anyway, at least we agree. The Cedar of Lebanon, behind the bus, is still there.

I think this is the Peter Pan Playground, in Bromley Road somewhere near Homebase. The mill pond in front of Homebase was known as Peter Pan's Pool. There is another picture of the playground here.

The point, SydenhamHill Andy, was that little has changed since the Summer of 2007; she was a fugitive then, and the house had been repossessed. Those interested in the house (and I know several) were well aware of this. What interests me is why have all these news agencies suddenly become interested?

This is scarcely news. It was mentioned on this site on 26 Nov 2008, and that reference came from an article published in 2007.

What interests me is why, after 18 months, this suddenly become newsworthy.

I can, perhaps, add a little. You may know that at least some of Richard's children were baptised in St Bartholomew's church; Alice on 3/12/1843, Emily Harriet on 6/4/1845, Mary Elizabeth on 22/3/1847, Edith on 21/1/1849, William Richard on 11/1/1852. You gave the address as 197 Sydenham Road. At ti...

We went to see Slumdog Millionaire at Beckenham a couple of days ago, the 5:20 performance. Despite only 10 Oscar nominations the audience was well-behaved and continued to sit quietly (and appreciatively) throughout the closing credits.

The Methodist Chapel is the same building, Will. For some reason they simply rebuilt the front facade in 1913. Could the convent you mentioned in Mayow Road be St Winefride's High School, which was at 16 and 20 Mayow Road from roughly 1925 until after 1939? I imagine it was a Catholic establishment ...

You may be right, Eagle. The source I mentioned was Joan Alcock who wrote in Sydenham & Forest Hill History "St Bartholomews closed the old school on Kirkdale in 1973". However, I think it more likely that was the year it was demolished.

Stanton Road and Square were laid out in the 1880s, within the area now encircled by the one-way system at Bell Green. This map (1894) shows Stanton Square; Stanton Road is not named, but it is the road that leads into the square, with just the terrace of 8 houses above the word "Stanton"....

The old St Barts was still open in the early 1970s. According to one source it closed in 1973. Certainly the Catholic church opened in 1974.

Paxton, I'm afraid this is all I can come up with. It is copied from "To the Crystal Palace" by C T Goode (1984). The caption suggests it was taken in 1954, so it is not even early enough for you:

Yes, Mary, I did win it (had to pay a little more than I normally do for such things). The Edney family were the village blacksmiths, their forge at what would now be 153 Sydenham Road, near Berrymans Lane. The business was started by Thomas Edney in 1790. On his death in 1849 it was taken over by h...
