Here are my suggestions: 1. John Logie Baird House. As you might expect the inventor of TV is a hero of mine. But not only did he do a major part of the development of TV in Sydenham but it is the foundation of a major US industry & pastime. He also personifies how the diligent inventor and deve...

News from the tills.... The transformation to the Somerfield format is scheduled for 5th February. Safeways will close on the Saturday and re-open on the Thursday. This will allow for a stocktake, removal of Morrison produce (hooray!), restocking and shopfitting. No word yet on which format. Apparen...

I saw a near miss this morning. A guy was halfway acroos when a car from the roundabout failed to give way. The driver did apologise when he realised what he had done - but a few seconds difference may have made an incident a tragedy. I then went into the the dry cleaners and he said there had been ...

Conways/Lewisham have struck again! The workmen carefully unveiled the new "New Zebra Crossing Open" signs either side of the crossing. But it is still closed and unless they are blind they can see that. So we have two sets of signs about a crossing that can't be seen saying opposite thing...

Yes this is true. You can find a tiny picture of it (under departures) here: http://sydenham.org.uk/news_shops.html Plust the words: "The Copper Lamp is now closed for business. We would like to thank all our customers over the last 21 years for their custom. We wish you all the best for the fu...

Are you sure about catchment areas? We live in Lawrie Park but use Sydenham Green. I guess the more popular practices may be full up but a quick ring round will tell you whether you can get on their list (and presumably leave another) or see you if your regular doctor is a long way away. My advice i...

Re the zebra crossing.

Has the review been concluded in favour of re-opening the crossing in its current position or has the continuence of spending on work & re-work been done on spec?

Looks like Lewisham intend to re-open the crossing!

New warning signs have just appeared. Whether people who don't spot the roundabout will see the signs is another matter. I've updated the report with latest picture here:

The operating company went bust. This closed Twilights and the Regency Club (on the Spring Hill side of the building). I wonder who's electricity meter is being charged for the ongoing lighting? The problem appeared to be the landlord was not willing to extend the lease which made it uneconomic for ...

Hi Nasaroc - any update on when the official announcement is coming?

I'd hate it if a glitch has got in the way at this crucial stage.

Geoff - how right you are! Today as I was coming back from Safeways - I saw that the left hand beacon has been lowered so it is now completely hidden behind the triangular sign for the island. I could not believe it - taking a problem about sightlines and making it worse. Don't they check? At the be...

This morning (Tuesday) men are working on the crossing. They appear to be putting a 'bonnet' on top of the beacons as well as the extra lighting mentioned above. I am still at a loss to understand how illuminating something that is out of sight will make it visible. Or can Lewisham now bend light? W...

An updated report with photo on the closure is here: http://www.sydenham.org.uk/news_zebra_crossing.html The question is - what are Lewisham now planningt to do - and how fast? We must press for a quick solution and a safe solution. I think moving it towards cobbs corner roundabout (ie in front of T...

Pat - I rang RoSPA to ask aboout documentation/specifications for zebra crossings on the basis that the regs must specify something about visibility. They came back and said the stuff they knew about was at: http://www.dft.gov.uk/ and follow the roads & vehicles menus http://www.iht.org/ As I do...

I agree Muddy and that the lights don't address the real problem.

Just in case anybody has missed the zebra crossing (and that's real easy), I've posted a report here:

Kirk's Cameras

Very sad to see Kirk's Cameras leave Sydenham last July....

Just noticed a planning application in the window "change of use A1 retail to A2 professional/financial".

A little bird told me it may become an estate agency. Does anybody have any firm news or is following it up with Lewisham?

Yes it is vile - but I like it! Now the premiership football clubs charge you extortionate prices and make you sit down and the police coral you like criminals - that is not what I call a fun Saturday afternoon out. So occasionally I can walk to The Greyhound (how nice to have the name back) and for...

There was nearly an accident on Tuesday lunchtime in the car I was in! I was being given a lift home by somebody unfamiliar with Sydenham Road. He just drive straight over presuming the person crossing from the other side was jaywalking and would hold back. It was a low slung car and the zebra is no...

Problems in Penge

Last night I went to a meeting of Penge Forum. I know its not strictly Sydenham but many of us had to shop there when Cobbs Corner made Sydenham Road inaccessible.. The sad news is that the last rescue plan for Penge Market appears to be foundering. You may have noticed its decline over the last 18 ...
