Re: Lewisham West CLP

Where does Jim Dowd stand regarding the position of Jeremy Corbyn? Is he one of the 172 who voted that they had no confidence in him? Just curious! Not sure but he was marked as neutral on a leaked list: http://labourlist.org/2016/03/leaked-list-ranks-labour-mps-by-hostility-to-corbyn/ On the one h...

Re: Where is the Sydenham Gap?

I'd be very disappointed if the Sydenham gap turned out to be the one now crossed by 'Pissarro's' bridge at Sydenham Hill Woods - it is a very small gap and the golf course side hill is more like a mound of earth. I'm looking for something more geographically significant - the author wants to name a...

Re: Where is the Sydenham Gap?

Robin, I was going to mention London Rd by Hornimans, diving between Liphook Crescent Hill (for want of a better name) and Sydenham Hill, or Wood Vale - the clue in the name I guess - another example of a local low pass, cutting between 'Liphook' Hill and Dawson's Hill/Overhill Rd or Perry Vale, cut...

Where is the Sydenham Gap?

'Cols and Passes of the British Isles' by Graham Robb mentions the Sydenham Gap, and I wondering if anyone has a clue to what he is referring. A col, or gap, is the low point between 2 (significant) hills. I guess the Sydenham Gap would have been on an ancient path way too for it to merit a mention....

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Are the chimney stacks functional or are they just decorative?
They seem to just be balanced on top of the walls.

I'm just curious how the landlord will heat the flagons of ale and cook the roast beasty if there isn't a roaring fire...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

A programme of work has now been agreed between the Council and Purelake that includes carrying out repair works to the building fabric including replacing the fractured lintels above the windows. A new roof will be constructed and windows installed to ensure the building becomes weatherproof. Once...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Nothing will start until the letter is issued, then nothing can start until the legal matters are sorted out and a small fine issued. Then all will be forgotten until the next general election is due. I'm surprised one of the candidates does not make more of this, and promise to knock some heads tog...

Re: Stabbing on a train

Is it reasonable for police to target limited resources at likely groups and areas? Yes people are dying. Is it reasonable that say 9/10 are totally innocent (the searched) and a little bit of goodwill is lost every time? Maybe. Is it reasonable that if the purpose of the search is something importa...

Re: Pedestrian Safety at Bell Green

It's definitely busier now, but I can't agree that it was that nice before, as the buses and sainsbury's delivery van drivers used to hurtle up it at 40mph+. If anything, the traffic is now slower and I've certainly never thought they need a cycle lane Riverside is a lovely route and they should ma...

Re: Pedestrian Safety at Bell Green

I agree. The savacentre is not much better - the optimum pedestrian entrance for those coming from Perry Vale seems to be via the small gap in the railing by the bus stops. Welcome indeed. I'll also add that the main service road used to be a fairly quiet route to access the lovely Riverview walk by...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

I was being a bit facetious. I don't know much about CPOs, but I understand they are not undertaken lightly, since they involve significant costs to the local council. In this case, I think the site with the requirement to rebuild the pub is, financially, a liability rather than an asset, so I I wa...

which I see involved a compulsory purchase order. Could Lewisham use one of these for the Greyhound?
I agree with Tim. Buy it, complete the work they both promised, and sell/lease the pub.
Then the lawyers can chase up purelake for the costs.

I agree betting shops a disaster for the area. Simply poor giving to rich. . Not necessarily. There was a story in the guardian on how these FOBT are a great way of laundering money. Feed the things hundreds of pounds of unaccountable earnings and by betting on both red and black, for instants, qui...

Re: Traffic in the High Road

I agree that the pedestrian crossing by the roundabout should be hooded. There probably was a good case for it before the council cocked up the builds of the Sainsbury's retail unit and the Greyhound. As it is, this is not going to be a busy route for pedestrians for the foreseeable future. In retur...

Re: Sydenham improvement works

,.... In retrospect we could have left the single crossing on the brow of the bridge. ... As a pedestrian, I agree. I think the council have been quite cunning here by implementing 2 crossings. It halves the recorded number of pedestrians at each crossing, so they can set the wait times to the maxi...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

If the council has made a mistake, then it seems reasonable that they try to rectify it. Given that the Greyhound is a place of local historical interest, why can't the council make a compulsory purchase of the site and the tied retail unit? Then they can contract the work out and sell the pub/unit ...

...
