Re: Will Sydenham lose its Victoria service?

Damn. Looks like my usual train, the 08.15 from Streatham Hill to London Bridge (08.28 from Sydenham) will be cancelled from January!

Re: Rebuild the Greyhound Pub Campaign #rebuildthegreyhound

Eagle, Alternative viewpoints are welcome of course, but given the active campaign and strongly supported petition for the rebuilding of the greyhound and the absence of anything more than a few isolated forum posts in favour of demolishing it, it would be difficult to conclude anything other than t...

Re: council flat living

I've lived on the Chulsa Estate for three years, having bought there myself. It's safe, very convenient for the park and generally a nice place to live. It's small and green enough not to have any of the 'concrete jungle' feel some estates have, even in East Dulwich and other supposedly more upmarke...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

Looks like they've finished installing the mural, but the rear wall is still shrouded in scaffolding so it's difficult to see the whole thing. Nothing else appears to be happening though. It's all a bit of a shambles really.

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

There have been a few people on site over the last few days and this morning it looked like the tiling of the rear exterior wall was underway. A bit strange that this should happen when there is so much serious building still to be done, but nice to see something going on at least.

Same formula in operation on the Overground from Sydenham to Canada Water on Sunday. Chap came round leaving a small packet of tissues and a note asking for 'some money' to help feed his wife and two children. I couldn't help thinking that the absence of any minimum price for the goods meant they we...

+1 Eagle. But as a relative newcomer can you tell me where the Duke of Edinburgh used to be?

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

Eagle, there were not many pubs anywhere that were hot on real beers during the 1960s- early 1980s. But times have certainly changed. Many pubs which I wouldn't have gone in with a military escort 20 years ago are now wonderful places to be.

Quite right Chris. The Pride of Spitalfields is another cosy local boozer in that neck of the woods.

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

Will people please stop perpetuating this rubbish that the Greyhound is too small to be a viable pub? As I've stated before it has a larger footprint than The Harp in Covent Garden which has been voted CAMRA national pub of the year on more than one occasion and for those who think that sort of thin...

Re: The Haven & Rookstone redevelopment

Closed curtains during the day do not necessarily indicate unemployment or even shift work at this time of the year. I get up at dawn to commute to NW London and return long after dark. It's frequently not worth my while to open the curtains during the week, unless I actually am dossing around the f...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

I've mentioned it before but anyone who thinks a small pub could not survive on the Greyhound site should really look at The Harp in Covent Garden. It's considerably smaller than the new Greyhound would be and I very much doubt that rents and other charges are lower in Covent Garden than at Cobbs Co...

Re: Going over old ground - The Hound that is Grey

Walking past it yesterday evening I did notice that the large golden 'E' from the name was lying on the ledge of one of the upper windows. It wasn't there a couple of days earlier, so someone has obviously been on site recently.

Re: The Railway Pub

I don't have a problem with a pub not offering real ale - that's the choice of the business, just as it's the choice of the customer not to drink in such an establishment. What I do object to is a pub winning planning consent to install new signage on its exterior promising "real ales" or ...

Re: The Railway Pub

I like the hanging baskets and the brass lamp fittings on the outside, but the hideous 3D cricket ball ruins the sign and spoils the whole effect. The interior looked clean and smart when I popped in on the way home from work a few days ago - but the two handpumps on the bar bore no pumpclips and di...

Re: Locally listing ALL local pubs

Saving local pubs is not just a question of more people using them. Many pubs which are sold off for development are actually thriving businesses which continue to be valued by the communities which use them. But the pubcos and breweries which own them see them as assets which are often, sadly, more...

My recommendation would be Channel Plumbing. Based in Croydon, but Mike came up to Sydenham to fix my gas fire and was very pleasant to deal with: http://www.ratedpeople.com/profile/chan ... bing/index

The update is welcome, but I do hope that the ugly black tarmac currently attaching the new silver grey granite kerbstones to the pavement is temporary and that the pavements will be left in an attractive state.
