With reference to Catscratch's comment: I agree wholeheartedly with you that Bromley are not to be trusted in how they treat Penge. You then go on to suggest that they will eventually want to build on Alex Park. I have to say that is highly unlikely - the planning laws forbid this sort of thing. Eve...

I don't klnow how to guarantee a place! You child has to be bright and do well in the entrance exam. Get hold of the papers the school gives as examples, and get a good tutor and give them plenty of practice at the maths english and verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The last gave me a headache when I...
I have to say that - if you can afford it - by far the best local-ish school is Alleyns. Such a happy, such a simply civilised school. In addition it has great results, wonderful sport, art, drama, D of E, CCF, etc. And it takes boys and girls. Truly remarkable. I have never regretted sending my kid...

Dear Falkor If you read the article in Wikipedia on the Domesday Book (for instance), it indicates that settlements WERE covered - yes, you are right about the manors of course, but the other groups that made up the towns and villages were also mentioned in detailed so all could be taxed. That way h...

Actually, what I was saying isn't a theory, it is what I studied at uni back in the 70s, and that is exactly how our villages developed. The manorial system dates from much later - after the Norman Conquest I think. If you study the Domesday Book (1086) you will see that over 90% of our current town...

Regarding the origin of parish boundaries, if you imagine (say) three villages established back in the dark ages, in a forest (most of England was forested) they would gradually clear the trees to create more farmland and provide wood for buildings. As the population grew, they would have to venture...

can I borrow a metal detector for 2 hours?
Sorry to post in this way, but I am desperate to locate a metal detector. The hire shops can't get one till next week. I need to locate under my drive the metal cover of my drain inspection chamber. I have a blockage and they can't clear it without this access. I will collect it from you and bring i...
