Penge Easter market today (Saturday)

I walked through into Penge today to find stalls out in the grounds of St. John's Church and along the high street: there seems to be some sort of Easter market on today (might be tomorrow too, I suppose), and some of the stuff looks rather good. Our old friends the Alexandra Garden Centre are one o...

Re: council tax

I'm pretty sure I've heard that councils were likely to be reviewing their banding and how it applies to individual houses. After all, if, say, you've had an extension built since the original assessment and have perhaps added additional bedrooms, that would perhaps be reason enough to move a house ...

Girls' Night Out, Penge, 14th March, supporting World Vision

Just wanted to bring to your attention this event on Saturday 14th March at St. John's, the church on Penge High Street next to the Almshouses, in support of the charity World Vision. It features Carrie Grant, star of Fame Academy, Pop Idol and The One Show, and comedienne Jo Enright, star of Peter ...

Wow, that was really quick! Congratulations, Simon!

Of course, neither event could be explained by someone else having reported the problem earlier :D

Wondering if it might be a good idea to unplug any sensitive electronic equipment, in case there's a power surge when power is restored?

Power outage

Major power outage in the Sydenham area, apparently affecting about 760 people (although that may be "properties"). The electricity board are aware and onto the issue - hoping to have power restored within a couple of hours. It's a high-voltage outage. Glad those touch-typing lessons I pai...

Perhaps that's the cause of the power outage? Hope it's affecting them, then.

Local(ish) self-catering accommodation?

Hi everyone. I might need to find some self-catering accommodation for someone who can't walk very far, indoors or out. It would need to be quiet, and probably to have lift access if it's up a flight of stairs (and not too far from the lift if it's in a large block). Probably a self-contained flat, ...

So, it's the second Saturday next weekend. Following last month's no-show, will the market definitely be taking place?

OT: Petition to save Beckenham Place Park public golf course

I realise this isn't exactly *in* Sydenham, but I guess it's the nearest public golf facility, so this might interest some people. Lewisham are trying to close the course down, apparently: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/70912 (Apologies, Mods, if this is in the wrong place: I wasn't sure ...

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

How ridiculous. New Cross > Canada Water > Waterloo would clearly be a viable option, so why wouldn't that apply to Forest Hill?! Crazy. Not to mention the fact that Forest Hill > Waterloo would count as a tube journey, so you *could* dispense with the rail part of the season altogether. *And* doing...

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

I got my first PAYG Oystercard statement since the works through the other day. I was surprised, and pleased, to notice that my journeys from Embankment (i.e. one of the specified tube stations) to Penge East via Victoria are now being charged as a single Zones 1-4 rail fare only, rather than the co...

I wanted my sofas to go to someone who was genuinely in need of them, they were in excellent condition, but in my naivety ended up giving it away to someone who was obviously going to sell it on. Night-time work on the railway - again

Does anyone know what the night-time work due to take place on the railway around the Sydenham area involves? It seems to be replacing old train with continuously-welded rail, but I thought the work a couple of years back had done that already?

Radio repairs?

Is there any business in the Sydenham area which does radio repairs, do you know? I have what was an expensive DAB radio, so it might be worth getting it repaired.

Thanks.

Re: Change in speed restriction on Sydenham HIll 30m/h to 20

It's a long time since I've driven (I was living around Birkbeck at the time), but I do remember that with my 1-litre engine I had to push 30 mph just to make it up the hill of Elmers End Road around the crematorium. I don't know Sydenham Hill as a road, but presume that its name describes it accura...

Re: Southern services to/from London Bridge

'Signalling problems' doesn't always mean problems with signals. I think Southern/National Rail have a limited set of excuses. They always have had :( I remember in the days when I used to commute, and the driver would come on the PA outside LB and announce that it was a points failure; at LB the p...
