I haven't religiously trawled through every post, so apologies if I'm just repeating what others may have said, but I would say Sydenham is more anti local shopper than anti local trader. If I want to go shopping, I avoid Sydenham like the plague; it takes me ages to get there because of the stupid ...

Re: SYdenham Radio and Church link
What is the truth behind the new Sydenham Radio? At the meeting last Saturday they used a lot of examples from Peckham Radio which is supported by Forest Hill Church. I've got no problem if there is a connection with Sydenham Radio and the local church - just be open and honest about it. Otherwise ...

Time for me to bump this back up, as the first public meeting was held today. A good turn out and everyone seemed to have a genuine interest in making this project work, which is important because, if this is to get off the ground, it will need a lot of local support. I think this could become a ver...

If that is a sleeper in the top picture, and assuming it's in it's original position, then the rails would be running from top to bottom of the picture. It could be part of a platform construction, some of which were pretty primitive, possibly just piles of sleepers. There wouldn't necessarily be an...

Obviously if it is part of the pneumatic railway, it's an end because most of it was in a tunnel. The bit of wood looks the right dimensions to be a sleeper or part of a platform, but if you mean by piece of metal that thing in the middle that the bloke's shovel is resting on, then that doesn't look...

Indeed they do rebel, thanks for putting up that link; However there should be a health warning on that site, as you can lose yourself in it for hours!! As a confirmed conspiracy theorist it has always seemed to me to be more than coincidential that Beeching's [spit spit] savage massacre of our Rai...

The station was situated beside Crystal Palace Parade, almost opposite the bus terminus; the main station entrance was on what now appears to be a totally pointless bridge at the beginning of Farquar Road, and on the other side of that bridge was the site of the turntable. The subway that lead from ...

Hi Gaz Bromley ran a very successful community project which campaigned for many years to get a full time station, I believe veteran broadcaster Dave Cash was involved at one point. If I remember rightly, they applied for a full time licence when they were advertised for South London/Kent and lost o...

Re: Radio
Cool, Cheers for that info. I did pop on the website and have a look and it all sounds interesting. I think it's about time Lewisham had it's own radio station, which I believe would prove very popular with the locals. Gaz Technically speaking, Lewisham does have it's own radio station, and has don...

Something in the recesses of my memory says that Dome Hill Park was named after the Dome Plastics Company - the owner of which had a house built there. Can anyone else confirm this? Very happy to stand corrected! And the owner of that company was.......................Rolf Dohm, the owner of the af...

Re: random recall on Sydenham hill 1950-------
. Further along on the left was Dome hill which had a very avant garde scandanavian style sixties house, with a sauna; a bit `up` for Sydenham, Near Dome hill, can`t remember before or after was a long period house which I was told had its origins as a hunting lodge for King James. I presume the 'l...

In response to the previous replies, the accident happened in 1932, and the last speedway race at the Crystal Palace track took place in 1940, if that clears any questions up. I also well remember the Sydenham Children's Hospital, I had my appendix taken out there (wrong diagnosis, as it turned out)...

Local hospital?
Whilst putting the finishing touches to the book that I've mentioned elsewhere, my friend has found a newspaper piece that refers to an injured speedway rider being taken from the Crystal Palace track to the Cottage Hospital. He's asked me if I know anything about this place, and I must confess, I d...

Interesting new book coming soon
Well, I think it is anyway! A friend of mine is currently in the final stages of research for his forthcoming book on the life and times of Crystal Palace speedway track. This track plays an important part in the history of the sport for several reasons; it was one of the first to be opened in Londo...

So then PJWSON, what you're actually moaning about is commerce? What you don't mention is the phenomenal profit margins that any food retailer makes from you every time you buy a product. Actually, in this case Londis are only taking a markup of 100%, which is pretty low by comparison to the norm. N...

Also coming to this from the point of view of a driver. My problem with this crossing is one of light; at this time of the year with the low sun, it can be almost impossible to see either the crossing or people waiting to cross, and at night you get dazzled by the oncoming headlights with the same r...

Falkor, I've just realised the possible answer to the location of this well may lay in the pics you posted of my house on my thread in the cafe forum. They show a stable block that was once much bigger than it is today and was also attached to the main house; they also show number of other features ...
