This is the one opposite Home Park right? There have been one or two mentions on the forum about it before (and would have been described as "Home Park butchers"). I used it regularly, and in the main I found the meat to be really good, and very reasonably priced, so I'm sad that it has cl...

A Friday would be better, for me at least. You're right about the importance of proper beer and I'll have to make an exploratory visit to the Woodman to see what's on offer.

Alan Godfrey Maps also sells maps of Upper Sydenham from 1894 & 1914:

I have a copy of the latter, which also has a street directory on the back. You could buy a copy direct from the above link or from a good bookshop.

Wells Road became Wells Park Road many years ago - there is still a pub called "The Talma" there, and there used to be a pub called "The Duke" until 2-3 years ago - the pub your relative ran might well be a different one that has long since gone. The street numbers might also hav...

Was that near Dome Hill Park - the map shows the area as "the wood"? The area behind what used to be Upper Sydenham station on Wells Park Road towards Vigilant Close is very quiet and deserted. Sydenham Hill Wood is also interesting - strange to walk through what used to be the back garden...

I use the Sydenham Hill - Victoria service and I used the "meet the manager" sessions last year to complain about the reduction in the number of carriages. The manager I spoke to did note my complaint, mentioned that other people had said the same, and several months later (when the timeta...

Reaching a 1000 posts

I notice that at least two regular posters have each posted nearly a 1000 posts. Who will be first? Is there a prize for doing so?

If out tatoo'd friend is on benefits he should be told he has made himself unemployable by tatooing his face , so will not receive any benefits. Surely tatoo establishments should not be allowes to tatoo normally visible areas. I suggest he wears a Burka. I have seen the person you are referring to...

Thanks Steve - I notice that there is still a sign fixed to a tree at the front of the site of the house stating the house's address - I'm not sure why. Interesting to see the site reverting to nature so quickly and to explore the old gardens in the woodland.
