Re: Say No To T£sco

One has to wonder why some local residents are prepared to expend vast amounts of energy opposing an new trader whose arrival is pretty much inevitable, but not try to spend the same amount of effort encouraging new traders they do want to come to Sydenham. Last year over a series of weekends, I tou...

Re: High Street Wishlist

I bought some ribs from the butchery at the weekend. They were lovely.

I admit, I can't afford to splash out on the expensive meat they stock. But, stuff like their pork hocks, ribs and belly pork is (relatively) affordable. Tasty too.

Re: Should I just give up?

Final comments (I really am trying to offer constructive criticism btw) First, I think you might need to redesign - or rename your website - if that is the main vehicle you use to raise money. I visited your website for the first time yesterday and (if I’m honest), it left me confused about what pur...

Re: Should I just give up?

Good. On my current budget, a hedonistic pleasure is sunday lunch at a nice (independent) local pub. Anyway, continuing my assessment / suggestions... Have you considered targetting donations from local nurseries, or cafes and pubs with community notice boards where parents gather (im thinking fores...

Re: Should I just give up?

Apart from the six month (largly unpaid) voluntary research project I'm currently undertaking, the community improvement website I'm creating on the side for free, the fostering application process I'm currently working on, and the fact that I'm my flat blocks' (unpaid) landlord liasion rep? Yeah, I...

Re: Should I just give up?

Possibly. Consider this: a) How many people (outside this forum and the local “great and the good”) know you exist? Especially those who might be tempted to donate? Have, for example, you tried leafleted parents around Sydenham’s various schools? They are an obvious target market. b) Rightly or wron...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

Ooh goody. The ham hocks I bought from the butchery when they were a pop-up shop were lovely - and cheap!

I shall be going along to stuff my face.

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

That's why we have competition law. It doesn't prevent one company dominating a market, but it does prevent abuse flowing from that dominant position. It also protects against cartels, and predatory pricing. Companies who behave anti-competitively can be fined 10% of global group turnover. That's a ...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

Fair point. I worked for a supermarket for several years. The money I earned got me through my A-levels and first degree. My tenant is a (recently) ex-Tesco assistant store manager. She was worked super-hard, but was always under pressure to deliver more. Nevertheless, the systems and metrics Tesco ...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

Erm, OK, I take that back. How about the last 12 months? The problem is that like-minded people tend to reassure each other that their world view is correct, when the facts state that it patently isn't. According to good old Wikepedia, Tescos has 31% of the entire grocery market. And its capacity in...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

I'll wager there are more people in sainsburys savacentre right now than have ever, ever, posted on this forum. You can either address the world as it is, or live in the fanatsy world that isn't Tescos on the high street wil do a roaring trade, much as the naysayer hate it. So ner! Ner ner ner ner n...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

Kinda. Unless someone kicks up a fuss, and tries to use the planning laws to stop Tescos coming. Which isn't very free world, or free market.

*wonders what the Sydenham Society position will be on this issue*

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

No, I won't.

I'll use Tescos as a top up shop, carrying items that I can carry while also walking the dog.

I will do my big shop at Sainsburys, driving. Like most of the population of this country do their shopping.

Because that's how the modern world works.

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

When supermarkets tried to increase the amount they paid to dairy farmers in the early noughties, they got hammered by the OFT for acting as a cartel.

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

Don't get me wrong, I spend half my weekends wandering round food markets, stuffing my face with free-range, organic fair. I love Broadway Market in Norf London (it's a quick hop up the East London line folks, and then along the canal for a bit). But, as far as I'm concerned, milk and bog roll are m...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

In my book it does. I will probably pop into Tesco on the High Street every other day. I wouldn't have if it had been a Poundland - you can't buy milk at Poundland. My footfall along Sydenham High Street will increase. Heck, I might even drop by another shop while I'm there. Of course, when Sainsbur...

Re: Tesco Coming to Sydenham Road

I guess it must be the site Two Halves - that is the only place close to the RSPCA shop that's big enough. Sainsbury's must be spitting feathers about the Greyhound stuff up. That said, there is a Co-op, Sainsbury's and Tesco very close to each other in West Norwood, so I guess the model can work. I...

Since 2004. I came over the hill from West Dulwich, where I couldn't afford to buy.

Before that, I lived in Derby, Colchester, North London and West London. This is my 15th home.
