Re: Venetian blinds

We had Roman blinds made up by Designer Drapes on Penge High St using material from John Lewis. Not cheap but a good service. I have had made to measure Venetian blinds before made up to my measurements by http://www.cityblinds.co.uk/ on Hackney Road, decent enough, I think they get standard width a...

Re: New Doors

If you are getting new windows too there maybe economies in getting a company that can do both doors and windows. Not local, but we used Sollex www.sollex.co.uk for new timber sash windows throughout, timber front door and a set of French doors. Although not a completely straight forward company to ...

Phone Boxes

I thought I'd pass on an update from Lewisham on phone boxes on the High Street: The box by the railway bridge (276) has been removed. The box outside the café (south side of Sydenham Road), near the railway bridge, is to be retained. The box outside the Post Office should have been removed. The box...

Re: trees?

Lee's point is a good one. Seating and lighting have no doubt (conjecture) been selected by the contractor, a result of the way the High Street works were no doubt (conjecture) procured which allows these decisions to be taken by the contractor whose interest is of course mainly cost saving resultin...

Re: CRYSTAL PALACE PLANS TO BE UNVEILED

Hi Mosy Assuming the blurb is written in an architecture and planning context, the terms mean: "translucent" - strictly speaking means a material allows light through but no view, but I'm guessing in this case may imply light and view e.g. clear glass "active facade" - probably i...

Re: WHAT IF 20: STATION APPROACH

As ever Lee, a great initiative. Normally the vintage look makes me struggle to keep my cupcakes down, but in this location I think it is rather suitable given the elaborate cornicing and moulded sign surround. Perhaps some work on the legibility, although that might just be the image. Keep up the g...

Agree that Sydenham DIY is a great shop and that the owner is knowledgeable and helpful, but the other guys working there are clueless IMO.

Re: What's happened to the cycle parking in the High St?

When I asked Riney about removal of the knackered phone boxes they directed me to Lewisham, after much passing around there I finally ended up with this guy - Tom.Henry@lewisham.gov.uk - who seemed to be in charge, perhaps he knows about the cycle stands. Incredibly, it seemed that removal / replace...

Re: second pedestrian light by Sydenham station

Thank you Eagle. The point I would make is that increasing parking and decreasing impediments to traffic flow will not ease congestion, London traffic will always fill a road to full regradless of capacity - witness the congestion charge, central London is no-less congested now than before the charg...

Re: second pedestrian light by Sydenham station

Agree with HairyB that the congestion on the High Street is a blight, I just don't get the argument which says that reducing traffic and parking means the High St suffers. Of course that might be true if the only people visiting it came by car and the shop and street environment even without traffic...

Re: High Street Wishlist

I agree that our whole food store is good, but the shop front and display is crumby and does the shop no favours at all. To those wishing for a bike shop, until we get one there is an excellent one on Penge High St - SE20 Cycles. It's a really good shop, it has a kids and adults cycle club associate...

Re: Cobbs Corner Roundabout and other related issues!

Just to be clear on the issue of road deaths (text taken from Cyclists in the City blog): Earlier this week, the government released its latest road casualty data for the third quarter 2012. The figures show exactly the same trend we've seen for the last couple of years. Although motor vehicle traff...

Re: Sydenham high street: street furniture

An update on the dog-eared phone boxes - after much prodding I have recieved the following response from Lewisham: "Jonathan, There are a number of telephone boxes where the Council is trying to negotiate with the telecommunication companies about them being resited or removed where necessary. ...

Re: Architectural advice needed?

Rod, If you are looking to alter (knock 2 rooms in to 1 etc.), you will need approval that the work is compliant with building regulations if the work is structural. New windows, electrics, boiler etc are also subject but can generally be self ceritified by the contractor. If you are looking to exte...

Re: Advice needed - second hand road bikes for kids?

Another possibilty is Winnie at SE20 Cycles on Penge High St, it's mainly new stuff but he does have the odd 2nd hand bike, anyway, he might be able to suggest something and is connected to Penge CC which (if you don't know about already) has a really active kids section based at Alexandra Junior Sc...

Re: Sydenham high street: street furniture

I took this matter up first with the contractors who told me they had been instructed to leave the boxes in place, and then with Lewisham who after a bit of prodding and confused messages have confirmed that their objective is in fact to remove the phone boxes if redundant - pending discussions with...

I can recommend the Alexndra Nurseries if you haven't been, really nice spot for tea and homemade cake.
