Lock up garage in Venner Road
In the 1950s there was a motor cycle dealer who specialized in pre war motor bikes, Rudge, OK Supreme, Levis, Norton etc., His name was Wally Barnes, he had a lock up garage in Venner Road, if you were facing Sydenham High Street it was on the right just before the junction with Sydenham High Street...

Re: Cobbs Department Store
Does anyone know much about the department store which once stood at Cobbs Corner, named i assume Cobbs Department Store? When was it open, and did it once occupy the whole of the corner plot, or was once part of it a cinema or club? I remember Cobbs from the forties. I went to St. Barts school in ...

Well, the garage is still there but the pumps have been removed and Berrymans Lane is still to the right of the garage. As previous, it's now a hand-carwash place. The old dye works is now residential after the previous building fell into disrepair. I'm heading out tonight and I'll try to take some ...

Buiks was there right up until the late nineties....was a great shame to see it go. Mr Buik had a stroke and became unable to run it and there was noone to take over it. It was a proper old-fashioned shop that always smelt musty, but Mr Buik was a propery craftsman that could mend more or less anyt...

I remember Sydenham looking quite grand when we moved there from Brockley in 1970. The difference being that people took care and maintained their own shop fronts and bit of pavement. Actually sweeping them and cleaning the windows......imagine that nowadays. I can remember, quite clearly, Sydenham...

Re: The 202
Is the 202 bus now a double decker? I saw one in the high street yesterday that was a double decker....has anyone else seen the same? Talking about busses makes me very nostalgic for when I lived in Sydenham in the fifties. Is there still a 108 that runs to the other side of the river via Lewisham....

[. One you may not know is The Queens at Patricroft - still serves a great pint of Boddingtons, and is well attended, despite being well of the beaten track. I seem to remember going there once with some lads from the nearby Gardner Engine works, if you knew Gardners, was it nearby? Anyway good pint...

Re: air raid shelters
I wonder if there is a map of all the public air raid shelters in the Sydenham area and if any still exist? Martin Just noticed your posting. There was an air raid shelter in Tannsfeld Road opposite the entrance to Alexandra Park and another in Silverdale Road, about 100 yards or so on the left com...

I am up for it, but I can't make the first or second weekend in October. Sorry I missed the last one! I don't think a group of people would have a problem at the Two Halfs, I have been in there only once, but it was fine. Most of the problems I see are from the people that drink on the bench in fro...

Re: Alexandra Park
We lived in Tannsfeld Road overlooking Alexandra rec until a couple of years ago. There are a few good photos of the rec in the local history section of Bromley library. These show the original Victorian layout of the park with shelters, bandstands etc. There are also some later photos, perhaps fro...
