Just to add my twopenny worth, a colleague was recently mugged one evening walking from the station in Beckenham. He was badly beaten about the head and his car keys stolen. The muggers knew where he lived because they made their way to his house and stole the car parked outside so had obviously bee...

Sewing machine repair

Some years ago I used a shop in Welling to service my machine and they did a good job but I cannot find it on Yell.com so guess it's gone. Should now be a growth industry judging by the number of requests for sewing machines on Freecycle. Nearest I can find to Sydenham is this: http://www.worldofsew...

Local private schools

We did visit other schools before deciding on St Dunstan's and were certainly impressed with Alleyns - sat in on a French class which was excellent, and they have marvellous drama facilities. However, we left the decision to our son and he felt that he might feel more pressured there with the high a...

St Dunstan's College

The school is very good. My older son went there and is now at Manchester University. My younger one still there and doing well. Having visited several of the independent schools we felt that St. Dunstan's was preferable because it had a broad intake. St Dunstan's introduced the IB a couple of years...

Trattoria Rafaele

Sounds good - we'll give it a try. For good Italian, can also highly recommend Le Querce in Brockley Rise - not Sydenham I know but not far away.

Trattoria Rafaele

Hi - could those who have been there say if they do anything other than pizza as that's all I've seen mentioned - not a great fan of it but son is so happy to go if there is some alternative.
Thanks for any feedback.

I once had a table at the Footzies car boot sale but didn't make much after paying the entrance fee. Nobody wanted to pay even a remotely reasonable price for anything and only popular things were CDs. If you fancy a day out it's quite fun and you get to meet some nice people who clearly do it regul...

To Jwana who could not get a local private school place for her 14 year old daughter - did you try St Dunstan's? If so, I am surprised they would not take her. As several private schools have been mentioned I would just like to recommend this one - we looked at several for our sons and this came out...

Schools

My older son spent 2 years at Forest Hill from 2000-2001 and we were certainly impressed by Mr Walsh. He is an inspirational Head who has turned the school around by all accounts. He loves the school and makes all the boys feel valued. Downside perhaps was the sheer size of the place and (from my vi...

Goldsmiths College is very good for evening classes. You could also check out the Floodlight website for other local classes. I studied Spanish at Goldsmiths in the evening for 3 years and it was a good standard. There are also classes at Kings College if you want to go into town or of course the Sp...

Here's a link to the recommendations from Lewisham Council:

As a driver rather than pedestrian in this area I agree with kster that it is difficult to see the crossing. Now that I know it's there I am always cautious approaching but it would be much better to put in a controlled crossing with traffic lights. Yes, some drivers drive too fast (they have just b...

Agree that Gurkha's is very good and of course Babur's. Kafe La in Perry Vale is also very good - excellent and friendly service and reasonable prices. Also highly recommend Yune on Dartmouth Road. Update re stolen car

Thanks for looking out for the car but sadly it is no more. Bromley police reported that it had been involved in a serious crime - armed robbery (someone got hit with a hammer) and then they set fire to the car and abandoned it.
