Re: Syd Society help request for pavement opposite library?

It's not just lower Sydenham that suffers from this attitude. Take a look at this snap of the pavement around the Kirkdale Christmas tree. The only thing missing from the picture are the cars that usually park there. Quite apart from how dangerous the weight of the cars is making the pavements for p...

Re: Kirkdale Village Late Night Shopping Event

Yes the signage is lovely. Does anyone know if there are any plans to renovate the pavement in this area? The Dartmouth Road paving looks good, and once you get down to Sydenham station etc it also looks nice, but the Kirkdale area by Costcutter etc looks pretty scruffy now in comparison. There was...

Re: Kirkdale Village Late Night Shopping Event

It was supposed to change from 'Village' to 'High Street' as per the traders meetings during the Portas pilot. That's why the painted signs say 'Kirkdale High street' and not Village. The village part was set up by the local estate agent, much to many peoples scorn. Kirkdale is the original high st...

Re: Kirkdale Village Late Night Shopping Event

Sydenham Old High Street sounds nice. The only problem is that there's no street called 'Old High Street', so how would people know where it is? At least with 'Kirkdale' you can put it in googlemaps and you know vaguely where it is. Just trying to think of a practical way forward...! Trouble is the...

Re: Kirkdale Village Late Night Shopping Event

I don't think "Kirkdale Village" is a helpful name, Juliam. It comes with a lot of baggage for many that live here and its misleading. The old high street has never been a village. It used to be the history heart of Sydenham. In my opinion, it would be best to move on from the temporary &q...

Re: Kirkdale Village Late Night Shopping Event

There isn't a Kirkdale Village in this part of the world, but I do commend what the Kirkdale traders are now trying to do in involving the community in regenerating the old high street. The unfortunate Kirkdale Village name was an attempt a few years back by an estate agent to rebrand the area. The ...

Re: Water Meter

In an area like Sydenham, with its Victorian housing stock and lead supply pipes it's upsetting, though par for the course with today's profit focused utilities companies, to find ourselves responsible for aged, long neglected and leaky lead pipes. Fair enough if Thames Water replaced the supply pip...

Re: Christmas Tree Switch On - Forest Hill Station and Kirkd

Did anyone receive a copy of SEE3's Christmas events calendar through their letterboxes? The details and schedule for the tree lighting and other events in the run up to Christmas are published in that free booklet, which I thought was being delivered to all local households. But I live on Kirkdale ...

Re: Water Meter

I've known people who have seen their bill triple on a meter and others halve it. Too many variables to say yes it's cheaper or dearer. No you don't have to have a meter. http://stopsmartmeters.org.uk/official-defra-confirms-smart-water-meters-are-not-compulsory/ They can't fit one at my place due ...

Re: Sydenham wish list

I don't believe there is little demand for the 356. It's a small bus and is often packed to the gunnels. I've frequently had to stand, juggling shopping, back from Bell Green. As JayB said, waiting sans bus shelter for half an hour on a chilly or wet night is no joke. Often buses are cancelled and y...

Re: Sydenham wish list

On buses ... A bus from Sydenham high street to the top of Kirkdale would be popular, and a valuable service for those with restricted mobility. Maybe one of the several buses that pass the Woodman could be rerouted to go up the hill instead of them all going through FH. The 356 is the only bus tha...

Re: Fig and Pistachio closing

He's applied for change of use Appletree, but it's not been granted yet and he shouldn't have started work without permission. Even if he gets permission (which I hope he won't), it's pretty much a standard condition of Lewisham Planning that no building works should take place after 13.00 hrs on a ...

Re: Fig and Pistachio closing

Planning permission hasn't been granted for this. An application is in for "prior approval", but that hasn't been decided yet. For those who don't know, 101 Kirkdale (Fig & Pistachio) is opposite the Woodman (where a similar application was submitted) and these two buildings are in pro...

Re: Putting cooker in chimney breast

If you're venting up the chimney stack you need to check you have an adequate flue liner. Quite apart from the risk of poisoning or suffocating anyone in the room above, you'll definitely need one if you're in a Victorian terrace and you're venting into a chimney breast that's against a party wall. ...

Simon are you saying the B&Q employee advised you to pay and that te store would reimburse you? If so, and if that's what you did, then I believe B&Q have to honour that promise. Retailers are responsible for statements made by their employees. B&Q can't rely on wriggling out of their re...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

I don't think there's any talk about changing the Greyhound's name. My comment was just about The Guinea Butt not being as historic a name as I thought.

And I do think the Scotch eggs at the Guinea seem a bit special. A real Scotch egg is a different beast altogether from a cold dead thing from Lidl.

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

When I first saw that Garry Mallen had changed the name of one of his pubs from The Guinea Butt to the Guinea I thought it a shame to lose the meaningful part of a historic name. But I see it's not a historic name at all! Before it was named The Guinea Butt it used to be called The Bristol Arms ... ...

Hello! I just moved to Sydenham, and am originally from Holland. In my old residential neighborhood in Amsterdam, we had loads of little bars and restaurants in flat fronted buildings with apartments above: like this one: https://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g188590-d2391940-i4841426...

Re: Windmill Victory

Hi Lee: I don't know if the developers of the Orb were ever serious, but they said they wanted a bar/restaurant/tapas type place on the ground floor. There would be cocktails. I was terrifically excited. SydSoc were very supportive. But I don't know if the developers were really serious, because I'm...
