Re: More clarity on library options?
'As a student, I wrestled with Hegelian Dialectical materialism beneath the dome of Leeds University’s magnificent Brotherton Library...', says Sir Steve, in order to establish his credibility as a library buff. Hegel a materialist? It can't have been a very good library!

Former chapel/gym on Sydenham Park
I've heard that this building, built as (I believe) a Nonconformist chapel but until recently used as a gym, on the north-west side of Sydenham Park near the junction with Kirkdale, has been bought by a Nigerian or Ghanaian, possibly Catholic, group for use as a church or social centre. Does anyone ...

Re: Crystal Palace stadium re-development?
Good to have a member of the aristocracy on our site and hope he is not drowned in wine like one of his ancestors . Predecessor but not ancestor. The last descendent of the Clarence who was drowned in a butt of malmsey died in 1499. The title is traditionally conferred on junior members of the roya...

Re: Baroness Mary Warnock & Lucy Mangan to lead read-in!
apologies for the inverted commas says Tim, but then goes on to justify them, on the basis that I find all these feudal relics ridiculous, and for the sake of balance, I should have put then round "Baroness" as well - except I find this ridiculous enough in itself. So what exactly is he a...

Re: Greyhound Competition Entries
On the basis of the images here, I like 29 and 71. I don't know whether the fact that the mosaic planned for the Naborhood Centre has a 'Sydenham in pictures' themes (but mostly historical rather than contemporary as I understand it) might be an argument for doing something quite different here?

Was anything said about the new youth and community centre in Wells Park Road, about which various people have raised concerns on this forum?

I hoped to go to this, but in the event I was incapacitated by the after effects of an unusually extravagant lunch. I hope someone will post a brief report. Any blood spilled?

i would be aiming at a slightly different market, possibly younger. Playing (not blaring) current music - a different atmosphere. Current 'pop' music, I assume, 'fishcox',- 'rock 'n' roll', that sort of thing? Thanks for the warning anyway. (Pity, we shall soon be looking for somewhere new and diff...

Re: Sydenham gets its new community centre
'Pinkfizz', you said: I should be delighted to 'enlighten' 'Robin orton' as to the basis for my comments, that is if he would like to 'enlighten' me first as to the closeness of his property to the proposed youth centre ! I'm not sure why you are imposing what seems a rather odd condition on me befo...

Re: Sydenham gets its new community centre
In response to 'Duke of Clarence': It is refreshing, if not a little unusual, to see someone with so much faith in the planning authorities! Not really, it's just that they seemed to me to be the best place to start. If they can't produce the necessary reassurance, other channels may need to be expl...

Re: Sydenham gets its new community centre
Presumably the possible incidental adverse effects on the local area, including an assessment of 'examples of similar projects operating in residential areas' , were considered by LBL when the plans for the new centre were being consulted on. If so, someone from the council (Elaine Smith?) may be in...

Re: Sydenham gets its new community centre
Mark my words, this will attract gang violence on the streets surrounding the centre and in the local park! The Peckham and deptford gangs will invade upper Sydenham and nothing will be the same again! Can 'pinkfizz' enlighten us as to why s/he thinks the opening of a youth and community centre wil...

Re: Snowing again / Trains / Travel
Major disruption on Sydenham Road and Kirkdale this evening. I was driving up from the Thorpes to Upper Sydenham. Buses slewed across the road in several places. and cars seemed to have difficulty getting over the railway bridge by Sydenham station. In the end, I had to abandon my car by Costcutters...

First post since Thursday or Friday this morning, delivered by a manager rather than a regular postperson. We share a route with Thorpewood Avenue where apparently the uncleared ice and snow lying on the steep steps of the front gardens of the houses on the south side of the road constitute a safety...

Re: Walking on ice...a self help solution
If you've got walking boots with vibram-type soles, they seem to work well in the sort of conditions we've got at the moment. I've been using them regularly during that last few days and find I can walk confidently in the snow at my normal pace. But then Pride goes before destruction and a haughty s...

Re: Snowing again / Trains / Travel
We foolishly relied on the TfL 'service disruption' site yesterday evening to check whether the 122 was running towards Ladywell. No problems, it said. In fact the 122 didn't seem to be running south of Forest Hill, at any rate in a northbound direction. It appears that the bus bit of the TfL site i...

Tim, why don't you talk to our local credit union Lewisham Plus, which started in Sydenham and is based at 262 Kirkdale? It is, I believe, thriving and expanding. See http://www.lewishampluscu.co.uk/

Re: Forest Hill School Deficit Budget
Sounds plausible, 'dickp'. But in that case what does The school had overestimated the income they were likely to receive. It had assumed that level of reimbursements in the first year of the FM contract would be repeated in the following year mean? What 'reimbursements' and from whom? The implicati...

Re: Forest Hill School Deficit Budget
I see that 'LA' is helpfully explained in the council document - it means 'local authority', apparently - but what is 'the FM contract' (which seems - paragraph 6.1 - to be at the root of the school's problems)?
