Yes I remember well and great idea. Used to play football and cricket in the park , no trouble from others , even when we hit the ball against the Grundig Works.

Hello You sound like you are from Dad's Army. These cottages I do believe are some of the oldest buildings in Sydenham as the origin of Sydenham is Sydenham Wells close by. The granparents of one of my friends lived in one of these in the 50's , very nice buildings. Surely your deeds would give the ...

Probably prior to 1914 otherwise would have changed the name. There was a very large German community in the area prior to 1914. Probably the owner of the original site was German
A agree very nice houses. An old friend lived there in the 50's and 60's

My Grandmother , who lived in Venner Road during the war , said the first bomb to hit area took out the German Church on Dacres Rd. If true rather ironic although Bonhoeffer was an anti Nazi and obviously they were aiming for the railway line. She also mentioned a V1 hit the railway side of Venner r...

Dan I agree about the kids amd wasps. To be fair the new management are aware of the kids problem and they are not allowed in the no smoking area at all. Or I assume the smoking area. It is dificult to stop them going in the garden but I wish parents would show some responsibility to their kids and ...

Dear organiser I apologise for forgetting the Woodhouse which is without doubt a rose amongst thorns. I often visit them and their no smoking restuarant area is great. Staff also very friendly. I know it is in between Dulwich and Sydenham but no excuse for my forgetting. I was really refering to the...

Other Pubs in Sydenham

I an not surprised there is only one entry against pubs in Syd.
With the exception of The Windmill and The Golden Lion they are an unmittigated disaster area.
A decent well run pub with good beer and food would do a great trade.

It is great that this site is being read in Australia. Yes Willow Walk is a disaster area. Certainly no wooded cottages. There are still wooded cottages next to Wells Park and many houses dating back to late 1700's and 1800,s. It is a great shame we have lost a lot of the older buildings. We mainly ...

I recall seeing my first ever movie there in 54. It was The Wizard of Oz. As a 5 year old the place seemed very grand. Unfortunately towards the end of its life it became a bit tacky. In the 60's used to be many local cinemas Odean Penge ( where Moon and Stars is ) Granada Upper Norwood ( a bingo pa...

St Phillip's Infant School and St Barts junior school

I attended the above St Phillips up to 1956 and St Barts up to 1960. St Phillips is now a community centre on Wells Park Road and the old St Barts was where the Catholic Church now is. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who was at the schools at that time and remembers Olive Nash and her p...

Homebase , surely the one at the other end of Southend Lane is close enough.
I regret Forest Hill Centre is beyond redemption but hopefully not too late for Sydenham

Parkers and Boag's

Can I ask any Sydenham long term residents if they recall the lovely shops called Parkers and Boags. Parkers was an old fashioned sweet ship just north of Newlands Park on the High Street. Boag's an old fashioned iron mongers the other direction from Newlands Park. Mrs Boag was an amazing charachter...

PENGE

Your comments do not surprise me . Penge is an unfortunate addition to the green fields of Bromley and is treated rather like the Georgians treated New South Wales
Good luck any way. The Moon and Stars is usually OK but even that seems to have gone down recently
