Re: Has our Town Pub been demolished?
In particular, perhaps it should be made clear whether or not there is a home somewhere for what I described as 'friendly, constructive, illuminating, non-confrontational, mutually supportive conversation about general (non-Sydenham issues' (rather than 'flame wars' and 'banter'). So you want the T...

Re: Christmas lights in Sydenham?
Since we are long past Twelfth Night the continued presence of the decorations, however inadequate they may be, presages a year of misfortune for Sydenham!

Re: Electricity problems?
We had a flickering episode at about the time you stated. TV & computers not affected, so it was probably a short brownout. We are at the Sydenham Road / Newlands Park junction.

Re: Christmas lights in Sydenham?
Dear oh dear Lewisham - nil points once again for Sydenham Christmas decorations. Please don't bother next year. They can't even bother to check that all the bulbs work. We really are the poor relation when it comes to this. If a council is strapped for cash (and most are nowadays) I would prefer t...

Re: Israel/Gaza
It all feels a little defeatist. We might make a breakthrough, you never know. A tag line I am rather fond of goes "It used to be said that a million monkeys pounding a million typewriters would eventually write out the complete works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know that t...

I hope the prohibition remains. It is a topic which normally generates great heat and no light whatsoever.

Re: #Lidlsurprises
I am reminded about the old chestnut concerning how to make a monkey trap. Hollow out a heavy gourd through a small hole in the top. Insert a banana and leave in the open. Monkey comes, can get his hand in to grasp the banana, but cannot then withdraw it. Since he is too greedy to let go he is easil...

Re: Has our Town Pub been demolished?
Why not just have the Town Hall and the Pub? I think the current three tier approach is good. I would certainly keep the Pub separate. I confess that the divisions are less meaningful for me, since I always list unread postings and then pick the topics I think might be interesting, rather than brow...

Re: Has our Town Pub been demolished?
.... there is no place on the Forum for friendly, constructive, illuminating, non-confrontational, mutually supportive conversation about general issues. If you could devise a way of restraining general discussions so that they fitted into that category then I am sure that Admin (or his successors)...

Giving discounts seems to be a very flexible arrangement. I well remember my father blagging a 10% discount for me on some photographic equipment by falsely claiming to be a member of an organisation to which the shop did not award discounts. He was a very persuasive man

Re: Fox Cubs -Sydenham Road / Newlands Park
I sent a message of thanks to The Fox Project, accompanied by that last photo, and they shared it on their Facebook page. Twelve hours later the post and photo combined had over 10,000 likes, 700 sympathetic comments and over 100 shares. It is short of having gone viral but I was astonished at the r...

Re: Fox Cubs -Sydenham Road / Newlands Park
Foxie (it turns out 'she' was a he) returned again yesterday for what was, sadly, his last visit. Something was badly wrong and, whilst there were no external signs, we suspect an internal injury. We contacted The Fox Project, who dispatched an animal ambulance. At the end Foxie dragged himself out ...

Re: Fox Cubs -Sydenham Road / Newlands Park
A couple of days after I made my previous post Foxie was no longer around. Some night-time sightings on Foxcam made us think that she had reconnected with her mother. Yesterday at 18:30, after a month had passed. my wife Mary called out that there was a fox sitting under the garden table. I opened t...

Pavement studs on Sydenham Road
I noticed this morning that flush mounted metal studs were being inserted into the pavement between Mayow Road and Newlands Park (that was as far as I was going). I asked a guy from Rineys what they were for. He said it was to mark the property line; within them was private property, outside was the...

Re: Booking things online: making it difficult
For some sites you do not need to generate an account. You still have to supply 90% of the information required to set up an account (the delivery and billing addresses, contact numbers, card details etc.) so if you are sure that you are never going to use that site again you gain a little by not op...

Re: BBCode [table]
BBCode is already allowed. Just yours doesn't appear to work. You will have to figure out why yourself. Here's a start: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=2147807 Admin Admin The reason would appear to be that you do not have the matching BBCode definitions set up for the foru...

Re: Fox Cubs -Sydenham Road / Newlands Park
The remaining 'cub', now rather imaginatively called 'Foxie', is still with us and a source of great pleasure. She must be getting on for six months old now, and is a very fine looking young vixen. I think she lives in Angie's storage yard next door, but she is over in our garden for long periods ea...

Re: Golden Lion pub
Most middle class children are well behaved anyway :P It's the dregs of society whose kids will run riot but their parents won't pay the prices in these places so I think it will be fine. :-) There was once a bookshop in Hampstead which had a sign on the door "Children of progressive parents a...
