Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

The colour may be similar, but the look and feel of the bricks is far superior. And as they'll be imperial measurements, will look differently enough to the naked eye (from the building behind). Thanks goodness there has been no attempt to paint them (like they were in the past I believe from memory...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

I was mightly impressed when I walked past the building site just a short while ago. It's been a few weeks since I'd seen the developments last, and was very glad to see the roof tiles nearly completed AND windows inserted! Black timber framed sash windows by the look of it.... Let's hope they keep ...

Re: Guardian's Let's Move To... feature

Hi decchips - thanks for the note. That's why this forum is great, because of being able to find out info like this. I will put that on my to-do list. I'll give it a whirl for sure...

Thanks and I'm glad of the success of that pub. I've not been there for several years, so will come and visit.

It would be a much needed boost to the area, and a big help in the travel options. Sounds promising. Thanks for sharing

Re: Guardian's Let's Move To... feature

Hi Robin. I am only writing down my opinion of what would provide an alternative to what is in situ currently (or in many cases an alternative to an empty property). We all have views on what would make somewhere special and I have simply outlined mine. Variety is the spice of life, and that works w...

Re: Guardian's Let's Move To... feature

Hi monkeyarms - if you do come to Sydenham, then greetings indeed, and best wishes for the move out to SE26.I hope that all goes well In my previous post, I stressed the word 'material', as I know things HAVE improved, but not to the levels I would have hoped for. Yes we have had some great new pubs...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

What a shame (although not a surprise). Will this be built by April 2016? (April 2015 - the title of the post - is long past, and even a hope of a pint before Christmas is looking unlikely sadly....) There is a pub in the City that I sometimes walk past, which has been completely gutted and rebuilt ...

Re: Guardian's Let's Move To... feature

Yes, it appears to take approximately 4-5 weeks from the request, to the publication..... I'll be interested in what is said! I'm sure they will mention the usual words such as 'rejuvination' and 'gentrification' and phrases such as 'the next place to be' etc given the huge expense of most of the re...

I certainly think it's right to be vigilant - and thanks for sharing - a great community thing to do.... Do please let us know if there is anything else similar, or any nefarious activity which may be linked... Of interest, does anyone know whether Girton Road did suffer any issues after the photogr...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

It's good to see the lively debate on my idea for a statue in the traffic island. I won't milk it on this post, and instead will possibly open another post once the pub is nearing completion (hopefully not too long!!!) I stand by my original thought re the statue. I am fond, to a degree, of post WW2...

Re: Redevelopment of 278-280 Kirkdale (by railway bridge)

Is there any news on this? the workmen seem to be finishing things off. I have enquired, but the people around the site don't apear to know what shop/company etc will be in the retail unit..... I think this will be a pivotal movement for Sydenham and the High Street - get it right, and this could re...

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Thanks Gillyjp.... If there is any more news on who may be occupying those units please spill the beans.... Re the roundabout, I've always thought it would be fantastic to have a large bronze statue to one of Sydenham's historic residents... e.g. John Logie Baird, or WG Grace or Ernest Shackleton......

Re: #RebuildTheGreyhound - pub to be rebuilt by April 2015?

Yes, all very disappointing.... if you walk around much of London, there are building operations going on every day of the week.... look how quickly the building around Battersea Power Station have shot up..... My fear would be that what HAS been built back into place, could it self be at risk, bein...

Re: 'What if'... two new exciting venues for SE26?

Returning to the original spirit of my post, it would be a wonderful thing if we could use some of our beautiful venues (currently lying idle) for something (possibly anything) to stop them being empty. It wouldn't have to be just retail. The reason I tend not to spend too much time on the High Stre...

Re: Car in Venner Square

I may be wrong, but I wonder if many other London boroughs would have taken ~week to remove a crashed vehicle from the main shopping area of a busy street (and a pedestrian area at that!)... I think a more proactive action should have been taken

I went there briefly myself the other day.... Positives are: - Much much of a modern 'atmosphere' now it's been brought into the 21st C (and I say that as someone who generally favours pre 1900 establishments) - Feels much larger now with the floor boards sanded and some of the bits and bobs gone - ...

Re: Redevelopment of 278-280 Kirkdale (by railway bridge)

Yes - it deserves to be a landmark venture for such a landmark building. It's not my favoured choice of architecture, I must admit - anything post c.1900 is too modern for me! - however, it does have a certain 'look' and it would be a crying shame if a less than salbubrious occupier opened up.... If...

Re: 'What if'... two new exciting venues for SE26?

I would agree with the point above that if the items one wishes to buy cannot be found locally, then there is no option but to buy elsewhere. The same goes with most things e..g. pubs, restaurants, swimming pools, churches, etc.... We DO have some great independent shops and where possible I will ce...
