I think this forum sums up very nicely why most towns are going to shit. Those people who want to make a positive difference tend to listen to others and find there are so many counter-arguments you end up back where you started. In the meantime those who don't care about anything but profit are bus...

Just because it is not currently in the popular memory doesn't mean it can't be resurrected. There are loads of examples from history of people rejuvenating ancient symbols and emblems which became so popular it was as if they had never disappeared from view. Exactly, user100 - tartan, St George, t...

Think it's a great idea. A version of that dragon on a post would look good on the Cobb's corner roundabout, even as it is now, even better with some shrubs. You could run the words Welcome to Sydenham around it.

At the moment all we have near there is a traffic sign saying 'superstore straight on'.

I love Gurkhas and all our friends and family rave about it when they visit. But I have to say that I was very pleased that they had painted it a modern grey colour when I went past the other day, which really made it look bang up to date. Very Farrow & Ball The next day I realised it had been u...

It's pretty well known that having more than one restaurant, pub or cafe in close proximity is good for business because people turn up or arrange to meet knowing they have other options if one is full. I do think evening opening hours would be great. We often travel to Beckenham or Dulwich for pizz...

I'm all in favour of raising money for schools and local events and advertising them. I'm also in favour of sponsorship, be it by local businesses or Microsoft. But what has that got to do with it? Foxtons is not local. It may shelter abandoned kittens in its offices. I don't care. It's the ratio of...

I see nasaroc and a few others are advertising Propertyworld for the next few weeks. If you squint really hard and turn your head 90 degrees it says they are sponsoring the Sydenham International Music Festival. And these are active members of the Sydenham Society. Can you imagine what an outcry the...

http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NewsAndEvents/News/LewishamAwarded1mToDevelopPlayAreas.htm Apparently Lewisham has been given £1m to spend on 20-25 playgrounds over three years - exisiting ones or new ones. That's about £50k each. Get your bids ready now! To submit an interest in developing an area, we ...

Manor House Gardens is not local but it is one of Lewisham's better parks. It has a few things that are needed in all parks A cafe, which increases traffic and means families and the elderly use the park not just hoodies Black railings and gates all the way round the turfed areas to stop dogs foulin...

But that side gate is wider than the old door in the ticket office, where several inspectors would often stand waiting to check tickets. They didn't worry about ease of access when two trains' worth of passengers were trying to get out, or about those arriving to catch their train. Like the way they...

What I want from the Sydenham Society is what we get, a large group of people who argue against complacency, bad planning and poor taste, be it committed by companies or the council. It's only by working together that any residents will be listened to. By the time government 'consults' the people th...

I've been having the same thought, leenewham. The bland design is clearly a product of too many meetings and compromises. I don't trust Steve Bullock to have good taste in choosing our street scheme, based purely (and no doubt unfairly) on his 'beard of bees' - a look favoured by the likes of James ...

I do like the way advertising boards are referred to as 'necessary' street furniture, and so exempt from decluttering. They are clearly nothing of the sort.
Can we all protest about that in our forms please?

Agree. It's hardly groundbreaking after all the discussion. 26 trees (subject to trial excavation) and some granite cobbles. The roundabout gets a facelift and they may close off Queensthorpe Road, which sounds good to me if it stops idiots zooming through the Thorpes. The digitally altered images s...

Italics was better than looking like a spelling mistake, but the term is correct. Do you insist that people say 'bottom of the bag' rather than 'cul de sac'?

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit so it seems my joke went below Jules's radar. Of course noise from stations isn't a problem, I was just taking issue with the Nimbys' complaints using the old reductio ad absurdum . And it is bare-faced nimbyism. They're saying bugger the freedom of the disabled if ...

I agree, GillyJP and Tasha And you also forgot the terrible noise pollution from the trains disturbing the peace in local streets every 10-15mins at all hours of the day, with tannoy announcements and train drivers inconsiderately sounding their horns. The sooner they move train stations from reside...

Trees and thank you

I just wanted to say hurrah and thank you to the council for planting so many trees in recent weeks (to replace ones lost around the Thorpes and the streets by Mayow Park). They're a good size too.
