Acorns - a blight on the landscape

We noticed three new For Sale signs in the Thorpes from Acorns estate agents. Being nosy and having a friend looking for a house, we popped in. Strangely, only one house was for sale. The agent explained the other signs were not advertisng houses for sale but were advertising a local school summer f...

Overcrowding isn't a problem on the way in to London Bridge at the moment, unless there are cancellations. (Although those in Brockley or HOP often have to squeeze on). But the return from London Brdge in the evening rush hour is always horrendous, because obviously every commuter is getting on at t...

I've wished for this in a few posts. While squashed on the Northern Line I often dream of opening my own cafe in the lodge house. Aimed at mums with toddlers, perhaps with a playgroup attached, it could be quite a big cafe.

I'd call it 'Hold The Mayow'

I wish anyone well filling an empty shop with anything other than a pound shop or estate agent. But most posters here seem to want a relaxing coffee lounge, while coffeeking seemed to be after commuters who don't want to stop even to wait for a sandwich to be made. Is this because you are considerin...

The Tube is still coming to Sydenham! Let's see if TfL agree at this coming meeting on the 14th.... On the TFL site, news about the ELL is not found under the Tube section but under Rail, with the link headlined 'A new era for London rail' . I don't know anything about the politics, but perhaps thi...

http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NewsAndEvents/News/WarningAdviceResidents.htm There's been a bit of press about it lately. Lots of local councils across the UK are warning residents to look out for these charity collection scams. You need to check that they are registered as a charity with the Charity C...

I agree that estate agents aren't to blame. They're just cashing in and sellers would switch to unscrupulous ones if you tried to be ethical. But banks are having a major influence. By offering mortgages that are four or five times people's salaries. By not checking whether people are lying about th...

Well, that was the point I was making by starting this thread (apart from the water table and air pollution bit). The programme said Sydenham was great for a short-term investment but didn't talk about the magnificent housing stock, the friendly community, the local cultural events, the wonderful pa...

Sydenham slagged off on Channel 4

Anyone see Relocation Relocation mention Sydenham last night? An opera singer and his partner were looking at properties in Crystal Place, and admiring the cafes and bars. Presenter Kirsty Allsopp tried to persuade them to consider Sydenham, saying that 'prices should rise by 50 per cent in three ye...

Cheers, Pat. I like the idea of the bird walk but its impossible with my children. They love to shout hello at wildlife too much! We heard from a neighbour that many of the Friends aren't particlualrly au fait with the internet, which I can understand, but it's a shame as this forum is such a good w...

I'll get on to them, leaf, but it'd be great if someone could post information here too. What got me thinking was the money that's been pumped into Dulwich Park. Being in such an affluent area, that park's Friends probably have quite a lot of time on their hands, business experience and powerful sup...

Mayow Park

Does someone know details of what's happening with the derelict area in the corner of Mayow Park? It's being turned into a nursery but are there plans to do up The Lodge house and toilets as well? I've trawled through the archives but can't find much discussion of Mayow Park. Because it doesn't have...

OTT hairdressers by Somerfield are modern - they have 'magic finger' reclining chairs while you're getting your hair washed in a side room! Very good with children too And the vegetables in the greengrocers are great. Just a shame they're not open a bit later so more commuters could use them. Better...

Well, none of these landlords are making a penny while they're standing empty, so they must be banking on flogging them off at a profit later. It's so short-sighted when you could add so much value by attracting good businesses and helping them thrive. From what I've seen on the agency sites, buying...

Hi Admin I've been posting details of these properties from the agents' websites in my spare time. Is this useful or have you already got it covered? It's excellent, Admin, the maps make it so easy to get your bearings. But I didn't know half these shops were empty as I walked past every morning. I just thought they opened later! Bit off-topic, but I chatted to the owners of the chip shop when it first changed. At first they'd tried to carry it on as a restaurant, but they didn't have any experience. And like so many of the other retailers they thought the answer was to make it look more and more downmarket, flogging tea and...
