save our front gardens

Just wondered how the rest of you felt about the growing number of people who are paving over their front gardens so they can park their car in front of their house? I think if substantial planting is left either side it can look ok but some in my street are almost completely paving and look really ...

A pie and Mash shop would be great. I like the one in Greenwich. It's not expensive either so everyone would feel able to go occasionally. And I agree with a post about a decent chippie - with freshly cooked fish, which is not too greasy.

If this is the case then I am very surprised that the police have not leafleted the area. We were recently leafleted because someone had their car stolen from out road but this is a lot more serious. Do you have any more details - for example the times they occurred? Eg. Was it dark? Because as the ...

Tex mex seems so dated now. I used to love it in the 90s. I had hoped to try it out when it was a meze place but hadn't lived here long when it closed and reopened in its present carnation. And was pretty disappointed when I saw what it had changed to actually. Does it have new owners or did the cur...

Many of my neighbours are retired/elderly (former professionals) and have lived in my road for 30 plus years. And although they obviously must love the area and people in some ways to have stayed here for so long they have moaned to me about how the high street has changed. Apparently there was a la...

sydenham high street

I would be careful what you wish for Annie. As someone who grew up somewhere where this happened, part or full pedestrianisation could be a disaster. The high street would lose so much passing trade. Who would see the improvements when they hopefully happen and then realise it is a half decent place...

shops on the high street

No Squig, I live on Tannsfeld. Over a year ago I emailed the town centre manager, because she was asking for suggestions for businessess to approach to ask if they would consider opening up on the high street in the Sydenham Society newsletter. I suggested she contacted East Dulwich shops. I don't k...

Narasoc. It doesn't look like they have any comfy seating like Zucker. That's what I really liked about the place. It was very relaxed. And please don't start slagging off young mums with buggies. If you were stuck at home all day with crying babies and demanding toddlers you would appreciate having...

narasoc. That is interesting. When are your stats from? 1100 more does not sound that much more to me really. And anyway, LL draws in a lot of people from further afield not just the immediate area - Peckham, Nunhead, Forest Hill and people from here. So, so could Sydenham. Also those owner occupied...

Nasaroc, maybe you are more knowledeable this than me, but as far as I am aware East Dulwich/Dulwich has large amounts of social housing. I don't know the names of the estates but there is a very large one next to the Sainsburys on Dog Kennel Hill, that large 'ship one' (you can see from Horniman ga...

shops in Sydenham

I knew Lordship Lane too about eight years ago and Sydenham is definately very similar to ED back then, far more so than Brockley. And even the guy from Living Streets who gave a talk at the regeneration meeting last year said Sydenham had far more to offer in terms of green space and range of archi...

Ruby, what about Wellbeing, the DIY shop, Snappy Snaps and Slatters? There is also a really good stationers next to Somerfield - they stock some lovely cards too - the museum ones. My daughter also loves the pet shop and the charity shops are pretty good. The newsagents near the post office is alway...

Was that Pizza Pianeta? I used to order from them too. Their pizzas were amazing the best I have had in this country actually and I was really sad they shut down too. I have been looking for an alternative, so am also interested in any tips.

Admin, I don't know if you have the time, but do you think you could print out some of the the many positive comments about the Dolphin, BMC, the very positive DIY shop thread that I started and others. Blimey, I am shocked that negative comments from two or three posters out of more that 1,000 regi...

I feel very passionately about this too leenewham. I grew up near a high street very similar to Sydenham Road in north London and in the early 90s the then lib dem council decided to build a bypass off it and semi-pedestrianised it. It was a bit traffic choked in rush hour but no worse than anywhere...

Have been meaning to ask if this road is in the conservation area. The houses are really lovely on that street (although a minority have already unfortunatley acquired UPVC front doors and tarmaced over their drives). Most of them are stunning.

Brilliant debate. And a really important one. Shame about the name of the thread though because I don't think it reflects it very well so might not be viewed as much. I think fruit, veg and books (ie, what is outside Kirkdale bookshop) and the DIY shop acutally look fine. It's the rails of clothes a...

I have thought about this myself, but there are plenty around and these rowdy groups of blokes can go into Bromley, Blackheath (O'Neills) or town for their Slug and Lettuces et al. And if the rough pubs that are closing down were doing such good business do you think they would be closing? (Although...
