Re: Where is the Sydenham Gap?

I'm reasonably confident that if there's a river or stream on/in it, it can't be a col or pass. A col is a dip in a ridge, not between ridges. It is likely to be (will always be?) a watershed. Any geography teachers out there? I know we're not supposed to rely on Wikipedia, but on this sort of subj...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

And there we go, round in a circle once again. We who voted out are accused of being insane, or stupid, or ill informed. All because we disagree with those who want to keep their comfy sinecures aboard the unaccountable gravy train that is the EU. Sigh. The EU is accountable though. People are repl...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

... Mary - if you don't like nastiness could you not try and be a little more conciliatory to those who wish to remain in the EU? After all we are the overwhelming majority here in Sydenham, Lewisham and London. We need to repair a fractured nation before it becomes even more fractured. You may be ...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

You can't have referendum after referendum until you browbeat the electorate into submission or despair and get the result the establishment wants ...I hope that no amount of anti democracy rallies by a few thousand will overturn the choice of millions. Parliament really will be crossing the pale i...

Rustya I except I know nothing and bow to your supreme knowledge being a qualified banker. It would have been more helpful if you had given more info of your examples. You seem to be discounting the 48% plus the 28% as not important and whose views do not matter . So be it. Do you mean the 28% who ...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

Mary Ill Informed I would think in most cases , except for the many who hate foreigners and have been active since the vote. I would of course not associate your good self with the latter comments. The comments I have heard from people intending to vote Out and the reasons in many cases left me gob...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

My view on Brexit - It's great news! The turmoil people have said has not arrived, the markets are functioning well, the Banks are well capitalised, and companies and jobs are not leaving the UK. Whatever your personal views they are all valid - just as the pro Brexiteers - but please think of an a...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

No Alburt The fiasco of Brexit was not democracy. The claims of the exiters are even being denied and ridiculed by themselves. Of course one should be able to sit back and take stock. The bare minimum for such a major decision should be a second referendum. No Eagle. Alburt is right. You can't have...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

Well I hope sanity will prevail and there WON'T be another referendum. It really would be madness for the powers that be to ignore the highest voter turnout in years. It is the crosses on the ballot paper that should count ... not the banner wavers and petition signers who reject democracy when it d...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

The problem is, demographics get misinterpreted. For example, having a degree does not equal being more intelligent. A much smaller proportion of the population went on to Higher Education and degree courses in the 1970s than today. That doesn't mean we were thicker. We had Further Education, Polyte...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

I think you are as guilty as anyone of being ageist...your knuckles were also being rapped. Well done for admitting the blunder in the first place - it was actually the right decision then, and the wrong decision now - you must have had a traumatic few decades. I was responding to your suggestion a...

All - I am reluctant to intervene and move this thread to the Pub. But if the ad hominem attacks do not stop that is exactly what I will do. I appreciate that feelings are running high. Such doom and gloom from a lot of Chicken Littles. Nothing has happened yet and the sky isn't falling in. All that's happened so far is that a bunch of city types and financial speculators have been playing Monopoly (sadly they're allowed play with other people's money, which like sharp knives shou...

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

In a democracy, not every result has to be a landslide. Sure, a lot of remainer sympathizers didn't bother to vote, but I know plenty of people who would have voted leave but for believing the hype that the remain camp were a shoo in. Only crosses on the ballot paper get counted.

Re: Celebrating Brexit.

It's frightening the ageist vitriol that the reaction to a democratic vote has unleashed. Many young people (obviously not all) seem to have a staggering sense of entitlement and double standards* in both this and other issues. But if racial identifiers were used instead of ageist slurs, how long wo...

Re: Burglaries

Your chances of recovery depend on how identifiable they are. And what sort of medals they were. WW2 campaign stars don't have names engraved on them unless added by the recipient. What medals were in the group? If you're not sure and they're all stars, what colours were the ribbons? Do you happen t...
