Re: Masks

not wearing masks to protect themselves and their loved ones. Unless you are wearing a special medical grade mask, then masks and face coverings do not offer any significant protection to the wearer. They DO significantly reduce the risk that you transmit the virus to others, and thus help break th...

Re: Masks

I was gratified to see that there was a much higher incidence of mask wearing on the High Street today, and in Lidl the compliance was 100%. This contrasts with the situation only a couple of days ago before the new regulations came into force. I feel a lot more comfortable shopping when all are wea...

It is in a very well-regarded part of Sydenham, a conservation area, about two minutes walk from the station. A desirable location.

It is supposed to be a temporary restriction, to reduce traffic volume during the morning peak period and thus facilitate social distancing.

Re: The 8pm NHS celebration

My wife Mary and I have been out on the High Street each Thursday evening to bang saucepan lids. Last week we noticed that the response was more muted. Far fewer cars sounded their horns and waved. The movement may be running down.

My wife complains that the price of humus at PFC has risen 25% since lockdown. Since we are both old and forbidden by children from doing our own shopping, I wonder how she knows!

Re: The 8pm NHS celebration

Last Thursday my wife and I were at our front gate on Sydenham Road, banging our pan lids, when a car drew up near us. The young woman inside held up her NHS badge, said "Thank you, we appreciate it", and then resumed her journey.

Re: Lewisham Council housing consultation

When I lived in Sweden they were very proud of their MBL, medbestemmelse lag, which required employers to have formal consultations with trade unions about any change affecting the workers. I was impressed, but when I asked about implementing the decisions I was told that the law merely required the...

Re: Planning Watch [w/b 28/10/2019] Shop changes

I think the planning application for 30A Sydenham Road is now in its fourth cycle, with a gradual reduction of bulk and ambition each time. So far all have been rejected as inappropriate to the surroundings (which they most singularly were). The Change of Use is a new twist. Watch for what happens n...

Re: Crash on Sydenham Road

One of my stepsons filmed the event from our upper bedroom. It looked pretty dramatic. The woman & child in the car were OK. Fire was extinguished after 10 mins at about 8:20pm. The continuing presence of the burned wreck in the outer lane at the Newlands Park lights is interesting. I guess the ...

Re: Now booking: Eye of Day The Mata Hari Story Upstairs at the Sydenham Centre from 26 April - 18 May

Mary and I went to the first night of Mata Hari yesterday. I was most impressed. The combination of her interrogation with simultaneous flashback scenes in her life was an ingenious piece of stagecraft, and extremely well executed. The acting was excellent, and you were carried along by the story. O...

Alarm Technician

Our burglar alarm, a Galaxy 20, was fitted and serviced by the husband of one of my daughters, who was an alarm engineer. Unfortunately they are now divorced and he is out of the picture. We need someone to give the alarm its annual health check, and I suspect it will soon be due for a new battery. ...

There is a US DoD standard for erasing discs which involves multiple overwrites with different bit patterns. No original information on the disc is then recoverable. I was commissioned to write a utility which could do this for a Swedish Health authority 30 years ago. I still have a copy of the util...

Incidentally, I admire the initiative of Chef's Delight who, whilst their main entrance was within the cordon exclusion zone. had their back door onto the alley behind the shops open, and were ushering people in.
