Weeble, if the Tories cut hard surely they'll blow their (limited) popularity? Along with the Libdems if they support them. It depends on how the cuts are implemented. There is public concensus that we've been living beyond our means. If the next administration is clever about cutting and manages t...

Well well well, things are getting very interesting aren't they. I suspect that, in talking to Labour, the LibDems are just shopping the deal. Mandleson has used this as an opportunity to get rid of Brown with zero fuss, pending Milliband winning a leadership election. My goat is being well and trul...

True, Labour stand to lose out the most from PR (at first at least). Which just goes to show they must be the only party that actually care about the country and fairness, not just what suits them. I'd say it just goes to show how desperate the current leadership is to stay in power for five more y...

Rebuilding Crystal Palace

Did anyone else catch the "Rebuild Crystal Palace" pitch with Terry Tibbs on Facejacker? Just wondering if the bloke making the pitch, oblivious to the fact that he's being wound up, is known round these parts and still actively trying to get funding for the project?

Me too; I only voted for one council candidate. Of the few remaining ones who bothered to run a visible campaign, all were underwhelming.

Hmm, looking at the projections, Labour could govern by forming a coalition of Labour, LibDem, SNP, Plaid Cymru and SDLP MPs. I think that's just about feasible, but far from likely.

Hung parliament: what next?

Starting this thread so that we can all speculate about what's going to happen next. If I was a betting man, my money would be on the outcome being a minority Tory government, for the following reasons: - Clegg has already said he won't keep Brown in power. Even if he agreed to be part of the coalit...

The BBC website isn't yet showing a result for Lewisham W & Penge constituency, but estimates that it should have been declared at 6:15. Is the BBC website broken or is the count still going on?

I went to Silverdale hall at around 8pm and queued for a couple of minutes. There were three colour-coded ballot boxes, each matching the relevant ballot paper. Things seemed to be running smoothly.

Nothing that has happened in the last couple of years should come as a surprise to anyone who has read J. K. Galbraith's The Great Crash (published in the fifties).

Spare us the left-wing self-righteousness. This government have shown that there are plenty of people they don’t give a toss about. Did they care about the 400 people who died needlessly at Stafford hospital? Or the nearly 300 people who have given their lives in an unwinnable war in Afghanistan? Ho...

You forgot the minors I grew up in a small mining village in Yorkshire. 90% of my family were employed by the Coal Board; quite a few of them were coalminers. They did themselves absolutely no favours by allowing the idiot Scargill to lead them into a battle which, frankly, they were never going to...

I think we are going to have too agree to disagree on this point, but I and the local Conservative party are in favour of the plans. I guess we will have to disagree on that one. I would also disagree that my liberal conservatism is the same as your social conservatism; it is my understanding that ...

One way we believe is streamlining planning applications. And if everybody is really happy with the plan for the high street we will accept it, but we still think we need to look at the detail of it a lot more . - Those two statements don't exactly go hand in hand. - The consultation period was len...

I do sympathise. I'm of an age when I'm starting to make plans for a family and, at the moment, I simply don't think it's feasible to remain in Sydenham and be assured that my kids will get a decent education. It's a sad state of affairs, but it's the truth.
