Sainsbury's is due to open this week - they have developed that site at super quick speed! It looks almost completed now, and yet was just a shell a few weeks ago.....

Just think how different that corner of SE26 would look once we have the pub and adjacent unit filled

Has there been any grand opening today for our new Sainsbury's neighbours? I believe the plan was to open the doors to the good public of SE26 today....

Indeed. They were still stacking shelves whilst closed this morning. Tomorrow is the official opening.

Exciting stuff. Nothing quite like bringing a bit of class to the area  Proud moment for Sydenham and The Greyhound.

I passed by tonight around 5.30pm and fresh foods were fully on the refrigerated shelves plus staff (not fitting out people) were milling around.

Put it this way, if it doesn't open tomorrow, there'll be a heck of a queue at the reduced sell-by date shelf when it does open ;) Seriously though, it did look ready from peering in...

Sainsbury's haven't once said it was going to be open today (16th) so I don't know where that's come from. Tomorrow (Thurs 17th) was always going to be the official opening day. It might look ready today but maybe they're still configuring their point of sale or something...

I do hope we don't see some of the well used convenience stores close because of this. And also the impact it might have on Billings and other shops on the High Street. Hopefully it will bring people in and bring them business rather than the other way round. Problem is many people would rather go to a Sainsbury's or a Tesco rather than a PFC. I thought we wanted diversity on the High Street - three Supermarket chains now, all within a few hundred metres of each other.

It's a shame the rents are so high for the other units. It'll put off many small scale retailers and restaurants/bars.

I agree - it's madness that the future mayor of London isn't talking about the convenience shops available in Sydenham

Great news - and this is echoed on the Acorn website where the property is listed now as under offer - just in the last ~ 24 hrs. The same is true of the Orb commercial property opposite which has also turned under offer...

Drum roll.... who will our new neighbours be?

Exciting times at Cobbs Corner SE26!

Would it be too expensive for antic now? They were interested before the place was demolished and entirely rebuilt and they tend to like slightly ramshackle venues.

Wouldn't surprise me. Just what the independent coffee shops need. A massive Costa. Still hoping it will be a pub

I see the last asking price was £720,000 (£30,000 less than it was first marketed at)
That means the offer that was accepted might have been less - say, £700,000. That seems like a pretty good deal, and would certainly make better long-term business sense for whoever bought it than renting it at £80,000 pa.

Here's hoping that that £700,000-odd was not spent by McDonalds... Costa do seem to like big spaces... There's one at Bell Green in Next

I don't know, I've only lived in Sydenham since last October. It's been there in all that time. On the first floor.
