council tax

Post by parklife »

I live in knighton park road.

I have received a letter saying that the council tax band for my house which was calculated in 1991 is wrong and I have been now put in a higher band.

Has anyone else received such a letter ?

I've never received such a letter.

I've heard of people querying their band and successfully negotiating it downwards. Never heard of a council changing the band unannounced. Seems unfair to spring this on you 25 years after it was classified! Do you know what band your neighbours' houses are in?

I'm pretty sure I've heard that councils were likely to be reviewing their banding and how it applies to individual houses. After all, if, say, you've had an extension built since the original assessment and have perhaps added additional bedrooms, that would perhaps be reason enough to move a house into a higher bracket. Given the financial pressure councils are under, I think we're likely to see more and more of it.

We're on KPR too. We had the letter too, moving us from band D to E. Seems like all our neighbours who were on band D have had the same letter too. The band is set according to the value of the house in 1991, so regardless of extensions/loft conversions, it seems arbitrary and unfair to suddenly change the bands now!

Look here for a full list of council tax bands. KPR is band E and D depending on the style of house by the looks of it.
