Lovely bit of old pub signage uncovered in Lower Sydenham

Post by monkeyarms »

Just noticed as I drove past, that building work on a shop unit on a corner has uncovered a nice old pub sign advertising "Charringtons" (I think it was) ales. Shame it won't be a pub again! Think it's going to be residential if memory serves.

Yes I noticed this. It looks great, and so nice that the new owner (?) is restoring it. It's where the Bob Porecha BMW specialist was,
Wonder if anyone here knows the history of the place......?

Ah, I noticed this yesterday, I remember it as the Off Licence but not a pub. The sign is great.

Its on the next corner up, towards Sydenham and not the bike shop.

I too love the sign. I hope they keep it as it is rather than cover it up. It's a lovely snippet of history.

It used to be The Paint Shop, not the bike shop. It's now residential.

Maybe someone with a halfway decent camera should take a pic and post it to the Town Museum? Charringtons apparently were celebrated ales since 1757, so not exactly fly by nighters.

Am sure it has 'Crown and Anchor' over the door, so it all ties in

It does Larky.

The tiles could be restored. It would have been nice to do, does the signage fund still exist to preserve a bit of heritage? Any Cllrs care to comment?

Interestingly it was a licensed premises until relatively recently. It was an off license until probably the early 2000s. The cellar door is still in the pavement.

It was still The Crown & Anchor in the late 1950's-possibly with the same signage-when one Winifred Keyes was the landlady (from the 1958 Kelly's Directory)

Not really.

They merged with Bass, then rebranded so the Charringtons name no longer exists. Bass later split the brewing business from the pub/hotel business. It gets a bit confusing as it was split again with the pubs going to Mitchells sand Butlers which I believe owned the Greyhound in Sydenham when it was under the Arena brand, although it's a tad confusing as some reports say it was sold to Punch Taverns.

Further research has shown that it was The Crown & Anchor until 1963; it then became 'The Galleon Wine Co.Ltd' off-license,which it remained until it became a paint shop in more recent years.

They did some work to tidy up and repair the edges of the tiles so hopefully it's being retained
