Fully agree with you Mr Juice. Maybe it’s because I frequent both so often (live in between the high streets) but Penge and Sydenham do feel very similar in a lot of respects.

Personally love what’s going on in Penge although as mentioned it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Have indeed already contacted the people who organised the recent paint jam street art event to get more info and also dropped the PTB an email too after a forum member PM’d me to recommend doing so.

As I have little to no experience doing this sort of thing the commissioned piece to welcome people to Sydenham is my only goal but I am gathering info for possible further murals later down the line in a similar vein to Penge I.e: permission obtained for various sites and artists have free reign and expression to hopefully produce quality pieces of work the majority people find interesting/like.

Please spread the word if possible and any further information/feedback etc is most welcome.

Many thanks again to yourself and everyone who has made an effort to comment/message me to date.

Cheers,

Jon

Many thanks for more information/clarifying your thoughts Brazil Nut.

I’m not going to wade into this type of area, in fact any type of area, apart from the focus of the mural and making all aspects as accessible as possible.

Regardless of your thoughts, which I’m sure people are grateful to be aware of, some people do indeed use SE26.life but not this forum for a number of reasons, some the opposite, and some straddling both.

Therefore, it is only right for the community for both to be used as well as possible/likely other methods such as written votes via email/Twitter/Facebook or surveymonkey for those that aren’t part of forums and don’t wish to sign up.

Again, taking into account your and other views there may even be a stand alone basic website.

I assume at some point aswell, posters/flyers will be deposited along the high street shops too.

I know not everyone can be pleased with every aspect and the above thoughts of as much inclusivity may be a bit OTT and be reigned back a bit but I would hope that there will be a number of ways to have your say, forum based or not. There just needs to be a bit of a thought process otherwise it may be quite easy for people to vote a number of times through different mediums for example or other issues..

I’m planning on starting to add people to Twitter/Facebook/email people at some point from this evening onwards.

Not really an official vote as it can be changed later but to start off so I can get stuff moving which of the following do you prefer as the image for the accounts (or if none!, please suggest your own). If not an overwhelming response in one direction I’ll just pick one!

Cheers :)

I like the last one! But I'm a sucker for a historical photo. I've followed on Twitter as well - I don't think I can make the meeting, but will be watching with interest and hopefully will be able to be involved as things move on if required!

Here are some links to visual reference we use on our pinterest boards which may be useful:

This one's a mix of furniture and installations which may be interesting for the future and the pocket parks:

This one's rather eclectic:

And the Kirkdale signs and parts of the What If Project etc.

I have had to delete a post from Brazil Nut on this thread because of a justified complaint.

Was it what I said about not liking the Walrus??!!

Look, I'm not interested in online sparring (and I'm sure the people of Sydenham aren't at all interested either!) so I'm not going to say anything more on the matter. Good luck with it all guys, it looks like you're in good hands with JMLF!

Across both forums there was almost a clean sweep for image 3 (9 votes out of 10) which will be used for twitter/Facebook etc.

Any future polls will hopefully be placed with the help of admin as an actual poll in a separate stand alone thread. Discussion will take place but I also imagine future polls will be given plenty of time for less frequent visitors to have access to a vote (i.e.: 1 week or longer).

Hoping to get the “social media” stuff started up a bit this weekend.

Many thanks for those that voted and have contributed to the conversation to date.

Have a lovely weekend all.

JMLF, great work and enthusiasm for this well done mate.

Just want to post before i forget, as I'm not a regular poster but drive and walk regularly around that parade of the proposed mural sites

it may have been said before , but two places strike me as best suited for space and visual impact (for both pedestrians and vehicles):

The wall nearest to the Acorn Estate agents....still part of the bridge but I think more height to it than directly on the bridge.

Secondly, the wall of the building on station approach....which has some signs on it already but there is space towards the top (its painted yellow at the moment).

anyway they would be my recommendations.
I will happily contribute to any crowd funding that gets set up.

thanks!

We had 7 of us last night (with 2 people expected giving their apologies) where informal discussions and ideas took place regarding a number of elements to the mural, with the following taking precedent:

Location including all aspects around selection (e.g.: ease of permission and physical access, visibility, size, surface) - Sydenham Station Approach was viewed as the most viable option pending the meeting with National Rail on Feb 13th for their input on locations and permission/s to be officially granted (all being well).

The importance of a concise outline/spec for the artist including theme/concept (e.g.; “Sydenham” vs “SE26” plus aspects of nature/history - great north wood/canal/greyhound etc), info about the site (size, surface, location) and budget.

Social media and the different channels for word of mouth/letting people know of the project and have their say at key stages of ideas/voting i.e: online but also high street posters/flyers/local newspapers/leaflets

Fundraising which will be based online through a researched and felt best/easiest option (crowdfunder), however local events (if businesses are willing of course) with proceeds going to the mural could also be a great option

Many thanks all involved last night and watch this (brick) space!

Could I mention one thing which worries me (unless pinned down) if a mural is to be painted onto a wall belonging to a private body, e.g. rail. That is whether a contract - if there will be one - will include a longevity clause. This is to avoid where a company could at the drop of a hat decide it wanted to monetise the space with advertising boards instead, thus covering or obliterating the mural.

leenewham mentioned earlier that murals could be painted onto removable hanging panels, which would make sense if permanence is not guaranteed as the mural could then be remounted elsewhere if necessary, either as panels or in total.

In theory, you would then logically be an asset holding body of a charitable asset, but maybe you have to be set up as a charity anyway to be allowed to "beg" for money?
---

On the mural itself. I see them as two types, either a simple clear image or a convoluted surreal "fantasy-scape" where you see something new hidden away every time you look. (The latter being perfect if opposite a static queue of waiting people.)

Anyway, here's wishing you well.

I liked Lee's list, which has more of an authentic feel. The "Banksy" look is a bit old hat now. Banksy is a genius because of his ability to combine cultural relevance and wit. I am less enamoured with copycat versions.

Once the spec has been established and the submissions are open we will see! I expect/hope that the entries will be based around artists that specialise in typography (Google: street art + “Survival techniques” or “Lionel Stanhope”) or have styles that would complement the spec which will largely have “Sydenham” as the main impact of the piece.

We will see!!!

Many thanks for the excellent point re: permanence and that will be something that had not really come into question/thoughts so far so it will be raised with Network Rail to see their stance on it. I would hope there is something in place/the understanding on the effort/local funds that has gone into a mural and that would not be sacrificed for advertising space or other. I am not aware how long some of the others that Lionel has done have been up but the huge positive response from communities and further afield I think would have quite a lasting impact on Network Rail?!...

Hi all,

Sorry to join the party late. I am a London based photographer and around street artists for over 6 years now. I also organise legal spaces so know the ins and out of it when it comes to logistics of painting most surfaces.

Me on social: https://www.instagram.com/monoprixx/

Some of the work I organised http://urbannerding.com/walls/

Below are few local and London based artists who would be interested painting in the area and who I know personally.

Conor Harrington

Louis Masai

Mr Cenz

https://phlegmcomicnews.blogspot.co.uk/

http://www.dalegrimshaw.com/

I know loads of people and outlets with quite a lot of social media followers who would publicise it when we do a crowdfunding campaign. I would also like to organise graffiti workshops for local kids / schools so we get the community involved. Funds from the crowdfunding can also go towards this. In the summer I would love to run free street art tours for locals so they gain a better understanding of this culture.

Let me know if you would like to set up a meeting and if anyone knows a local business who is willing to give up its outdoor space for an artist so we can get the ball rolling. Not everything has to be painted at once. We have quite a lot of foreign artists visiting us in spring / summer. We could have a lovely International vibe going on here in Sydenham within 12 months.

Let me know your thoughts and sorry if I said things that have been mentioned before. A local friend send this to me. I moved into the area 18 months ago and wasn't aware of this message board.

Best,

Nelly

Hey Nelly, I’ve added you on twitter (@sydenhamural) and many thanks for all the info and enthusiasm. The mural will be a stand alone project for the time being and will see how popular it is but that isn’t to stop thinking/doing things alongside! I’ve already collated a few local artists, some on your list, some I will contact from the info you have provided when the location and specifications are sorted. They will then have a set time to put in their designs and a vote will take place!

I’ve also been in contact with London Calling/Paint Jam and been generally looking/snapping potential canvases for future works if this all takes off/is desired.

In terms of garden walls etc, the only places that spring to mind might be the dolphin, blue mountains small outdoor bit at the back, foxes and the bricklayers arms. It may be worth enquiring there to see if they have any space they would like something - The golden lion perhaps too.

All updates will take place across both forums (se26.life is an alternative) and twitter at present! ...
