We saw this on Saturday (with a 6 year old) and really enjoyed it. You get a good view no matter where you sit. It's a really imaginative take on the storytelling of Hans Christian Anderson that had both adults and children laughing. It's not just about the Little Mermaid, it incorporates other stories by Hans Christian Anderson and has little to do with the Disney film. It's a clever play that has something for children of all ages, the songs are good too and there are some nice 'Easter Egg' style surprises.

You get to meet the actors afterwards. There were lots of kids queuing up to see them. On the subject of kids, it's family friendly but al the children were well behaved and at no point detracted from the play. In fact, their infectious laughter enhanced it.

It's our first trip to the Sydenham Centre theatre and it's a fantastic local resource. Long may it continue.

One thing strikes me as odd, and I'm unsure why this is the case, but from the outside, would never know there is a theatre in the Sydenham Centre. I find this baffling. Surely the window should scream about there being a great local resource on our doorstep, plum in the centre of the high street. I don't think is this is to do with it being a multi-use space or not, but it's really strange that it's not better publicised in such a prominent location. This is exactly the sort of thing high streets need in them.

Perhaps local restaurants could offer pre or post-theatre deals too. This really would benefit from being embraced locally and it's nice to see it's sponsored by local businesses like Property World (they do this a lot, which we must applaud), Fresh and Fruity and Billings.

We’ve seen it too, and the kids were rapt all the way through. Have been to all their kids’ shows - Jack and the Beanstalk is still my personal favourite (we went twice) but they’ve all been good. Heard good stuff about the adult ones too, but never been.

On prominence - the Spontaneous shows are pretty well promoted locally, but I don’t think the ‘theatre’ has any independent existence (they are the only ones using it for that purpose, except for stuff which happens as part of the Arts festival). Presumably though anyone can hire the venue and put on their own stuff, subject to being willing to run it all themselves (so there is, as far as I know, no Council support for running the door, lighting, etc). Not really a ‘theatre’ in that sense then - a space with a stage, and you have to bring the theatre yourself.
