Penge Food Assembly to Food Hub...

Post by JMLF »

Just a shout out for anyone who is involved in the nearby Food Assembly Or is interested in joining (as producer or shopper!). Personally I’ve been ordering on a weekly basis give or take for a few months and all produce (typically as local as possible) has been beautiful and in some instances is easier than trying to get out to horniman or CP food markets on the Saturday to get some of the similar produce.

Without prattling on here is roughly what it is:
A food hub which has producers and growers deliver directly to the volunteers who run the service
This cuts out the middleman/woman so more profits go directly to the growers/producers
All produce is sourced as locally as possible
Examples of Products - fruit, veg, meat, cheeses direct from the nearest farms to locally made pies, bread, salami, smoked meat and fish, gluten free cakes, vegan ready meals, fermented products (like sauerkraut and Kimchee) and sauces/chutneys.

You order online and pick up on a Thursday from the Goldsmiths Arms in Penge from 5.30-7.30.

The general idea is to have an easily accessible place to pick up locally produced or farmed goods with more money going directly back to those who grow/rear/fish/make the stuff. Additionally, as a community volunteer lead thing based out of a local resource (the pub) perhaps some people may support the whole venture by volunteering or buying a drink on a Thursday etc which they may not normally do thereby supporting the local community in a small way.

I’ve only been buying stuff semi-regularly for around 3/4 months but it’s all been fresh, delicious and generally reasonably priced.

They are having a little upheaval with change of website and some producers etc so will be interesting to see what is on offer when the next market “opens” on the 13th October (is the aim anyways). The market is typically “open” Friday night/Saturday morning through to Tuesday 2am. Orders are then put in for the pick-up on the Thursday.

Hope that explains it!
