Sydenham Town's Brand New Site!

Post by admin »

With a fair wind and no technical hitches Sydenham Town will begin transiting to a brand new site over the next week or two. Lots of new features and widgets!

This is a complex process and I will try and keep everything going - but there may be times when links don't work or things disappear. DO NOT PANIC!

The first stage will be the forum .... watch this space (or a 404 if I screw up!)

I plan to update the forum tonight - MONDAY. This will be the new software but using the old branding.

You should be able to read the forum at all times. However, to avoid problems while the database is being converted and indexed, NEW postings and registrations will be suspended.

I anticipate this will take 2/3 hours.

Update to the new software is complete as you may have noticed ... now onto the conversion of the rest of the website and new branding across all. I have to get the company accounts done first but it is coming, coming ...

I hate all change, but apart from that it looks good ;-)

One small low-priority niggle. Previously if I selected a topic from the RSS feed it would subsequently appear with a changed blue icon. I used this as a bookmark to see what new posts had appeared. No icon change from the new site. I am using Firefox; latest version.

So who's updated their profile?!!
A nice touch to add personal blog/web addresses and interests, birthdays, etc.

But what's all this Friend or Foe business?

Do you have to log off, now?
How long will you appear as Online if you're not actually online but forgot to log off?

Hi Stuart:

This seems to be a bug. From viewing at least one posting - http://forum.sydenham.org.uk/viewtopic. ... 172#p39172 when I then select 'Forum' on the main menu, I get a 404 Not Found error. Couldn't possibly be to do with it being a post by BBW :D I've not managed to reproduce it from anywhere else. I'm using Chrome, if that helps, but it also happens with Firefox.

Ok - same problem from a posting by Tulse Hill Terry - so not BBW's fault - not that I ever thought it was. It's trying to take you to the url http://forum.sydenham.org.uk/forum/

Tim

The forum menu 404 bug is now fixed. It was nothing to do with the forum but an error within the menu file when an incorrect link is shown when already in forum.sydenham.org.uk. Hence it has always been there so thanks for spotting it!

The forum exists at addresses:
http://forum.sydenham.org.uk
http://sydenham.org.uk/forum
http://www.sydenham.org.uk/forum.

I can't decide which I like best ...

The online status has always been 5 minutes from the last page request or when logged off. I do not think it has changes - just that it is now shown on individual posts and not just the index page.

Also no FOES here. I shall look deeper - be warned!

The new RSS feed has many more options than the old which I am still trying to et my head around. You can see these if you click on the icon in Firefox and presumably other browsers. I am planning to use this elsewhere so watch this space. So more gains than losses there I hope.

I really don't think we need that 'friend or foe' thingy. Did that come as default with the new design?

Now, should I reveal a bit more about myself and put up my website? Not sure about that either. It would be weird if one of you recognized me in Morelys. Weird and embarrassing.

Yes, that was the default. I think I will leave in Friend or Foe as it might be useful to some.

I will take out all the Profile stuff except Birthdays which is kinda nice. The problem with the rest is it in an invitation to spammers/scammers to join and spread their nasty links.

I've seen your little blog, dunny. If I ever pass you on the highstreet, instead of allowing you to pass by blissfully unaware, I'll stop you and ask you for the time. And whilst you're digging out your mobile you'll suddenly become aware that the stranger stood before you is flashing you a wicked grin, dazzling you into a fearful trance with his sharp teeth.

I jest, of course.

But if it's any consolation, I've been approached/accosted by a few of the characters who post on here whilst they were out campaigning on behalf of the highstreet. And they were the epitome of reserve and normality.

Though I bet that when they got home they bolted their front door, hyperventilating whilst silently praying: "I hope to god he didn't follow me home."

I found sending a PM a bit confusing, but then I'm a bit fick anyway. Seems quite long winded, unless I'm doing something drastically stupid.

Hi Stuart,

Since Monday evening, I haven't been able to receive feeds on my Sony Ericsson W995 (Orange) mobile. I can no longer read about Big Bad Wolf's views on The Dolphin or see Tim Lund's interesting photos whilst at the queue in Co-Op.

I'm using the url: http://www.sydenham.org.uk/forum

I've seen you checking your mobile for feeds, so what works on yours? Which one do you recommend?

The old feed still works (on a Nokia N95) at: http://sydenham.org.uk/rss.php (with format changes).

The official new set are:
http://sydenham.org.uk/feed.php (All topics)
http://forum.sydenham.org.uk/feed.php?mode=topics (New topics)

Plus the useless:
http://forum.sydenham.org.uk/feed.php?m ... ics_active (Active topics)
http://forum.sydenham.org.uk/feed.php?mode=forums (Forum stats)

Maybe I'm missing someting here
Where is the new site?
What is the web address.
Can't see anything new?
Maybe a new colour blue?
Or is a new site in the making?

As I can see for months now that the homapage doesn't change that much ,do we get new updates each year?

And looking at the forum some topics are years old.

Yes - I think you are missing something. It' s possible that Admin calling this thread 'Sydenham Town's Brand New Site' was a bit confusing, but since, to retain the vitality of the existing site and the search engine rankings, Admin was hardly going to change the web address, I read this, and most other people I would guess, as 'Sydenham Town's (the web site) Brand New Look'. As Admin says,
The first stage will be the forum
- and I'm sure you've noticed a bit more than a different shade of blue!

Again to quote Admin
This is a complex process and I will try and keep everything going
I don't know all the complexities, but as someone with a bit of IT background, I can appreciate they may be considerable.

As to what other changes are in store - I have no idea. Like other people, I have on occasions suggested improvement to Admin, especially on the parts of the the site other than the Forum. But I take as given that he knows what he's doing.
