Sydenham Assembly - Thursday 12 September

Post by Chris Best »

Everyone living in Sydenham ward should have received the Sydenham Assembly Autumn Newsletter through their door inviting them to the next meeting on Thursday 12 September starting at 7pm at The Sydenham Centre next to the Post Office.

At the last meeting in June we reviewed the top five priorities and agreed an amended list -

1. Bringing the community together
• Intergenerational and intercultural - activities for elders and youth - use of TNG during the day for community groups, after school clubs
• Volunteering - time credits and timebanking
• Residents Associations
• Information and communication - written and electronic

2. Health, Well Being and Community Safety
• Leisure activities - library, active lifestyles, Arts Festival, CEL taster sessions
• Public Health - restrictions on Alcohol Licensing and Takeaways
• SNTs

3. Vibrant high street
• Shop local and home deliveries
• SEE3 Portas Pilot - street markets inc youth market
• Neighbourhood planning and enforcement - keep local pubs
• Levels of rent and business rates

4. Clean and Green
• More street trees
• Parks with cafes
• Park keepers 7 days a week - dog patrols
• Range of activities for all residents - walking, tennis, skate park

5. Transport
• Completion of Sydenham Road - Mayow Road to Bell Green
• Countdown bus stops
• Improvement to train service - long term Bakerloo line

We now need to agree the prioritisation of the £12,500 Assembly Fund to deliver on some of the actions under the priorities. This will be through table discussions so an opportunity for you to give your views in person and chat to other residents and traders.

We will start the meeting with an update from HIghways on the improvements to Sydenham Road and Station Approach plus the plans for the next phase to Kent House Road.

This will be followed by a presentation from Planners on various issues we have been discussing - The Greyhound, enforcement issues, national policy on change of use - retail, betting shops, restaurants etc as well as the current consultation on the Statement of Community Involvement. Your chance to ask the Planning Manager the questions you have raised here.

The final presentation will be from Carolyn Unsted, Headteacher of Sydenham School who will talk about the rebuilding of the school and the improved facilities this will offer.

There be time for other issues to be raised as well as updates including the latest from SEE3, Sydenham market and how you can get involved in the changes taking place.

Refreshments available from 6.45pm and the meeting will finish at 9pm.

Lewisham Highways man and Riney showed a great team partnership - discussing the improvement works;

Lewisham Planner demonstrated lack of spine about Greyhound and other matters - weak and feeble - very disappointing and so now I can now understand how we have got to the position we are in.

Good presentation by head of Sydenham school - very informative about the building works

Lots of other announcements - and also direction agreed on how to consider project priorities that will benefit from grant allocation

And news about Time Bank

I'm sure other things were discussed as well

Not sure I agree about the Highways man. He seemed to want to blame TFL for all the problems with the huge congestion that has happened as a consequence of the works. Still I live in hope that the traffic chaos will be resolved once TFL and the Council get their act together.

Are there any minutes published anywhere?

My memory like most people's can become selective or fade over time. If minutes aren't published, perhaps we should all take comprehensive notes but it seems illogical that none would be published. Just a case of finding them?

Yes the minutes are published on Lewisham Council's web site - http://councilmeetings.lewisham.gov.uk/ ... ly.pdf?T=1 are the minutes for the last meeting in June.

I will let you know when the minutes for September have been posted.
