LOWER CRYSTAL PALACE STATION

Post by leenewham »

Having moved jobs I often stand in wonder at lower sydenham station.

It looks like platform 3 had a roof. The central platform looks as if it has been removed.

Am I right or was it a bit of Victorian architectural trickey?

This is an screenshot from the English Heritage website.

Do any pictures exist of the roof or images of the station in happier times?

Great to see they have done up this part of the station. I seem to recall it was partly boarded up many years ago.

There are some images on the second page of this thread, as well as others elsewhere on other threads.

You could try the search function, but then not everything is clearly titled when posted.

the station roof was removed around the 1910s. There was some incident in the USA where a station roof collapsed and a number of people died. So they decided to remove the roof on the lower station. (well what I read somewhere)

I'm not sure when the central platform was removed might have been the same time.
