New to Sydenham!

Post by Akriti »

Hi everyone!

Moving to Sydenham next week! Would be great to get some tips on things to do/places to go in the area. Sorry to be vague - Don't know many people in South East London so any advice appreciated! Looking forward to moving into my new place.

Thanks

Hello Akriti

Welcome to the neighbourhood. What kind of stuff/places do you like do/go to? There're nice parks locally, the Horniman Museum is just up the road, the Bethel Hospital museum isn't far....you can play bowls in Alexandra Rec or play tennis in Mayow Park....loads of cool stuff.

Fresh and Fruity good for vegs etc. PFC a nice wide range of food items. Sainsburys local ...really friendly. Kirkdale books ..very helpful , unusual books, lovely for kids to browse etc. Hope your move goes/has gone well

Thanks everyone!

Moving today and looking forward to exploring the area. Love finding nice places to eat and hopefully the weather will keep improving so I can enjoy the parks! The book shop sounds lovely - I think I heard they run a book club?

Hi Akriti,

Welcome to Sydenham - hope you'll be really happy here. It is a brilliant place to live!

Some other tips to throw in: we're blessed with an abundance of decent Indian restaurants and takeaways, including several award-winning ones. Our favourite is Barrakah - try their Bombay Squid & Poodina Gosht (lamb) - really spectacular food.

If you get the 122 bus from Kirkdale then a 15 minute ride will drop you outside the Jack Studio Theatre, which is one of London's longest-running and respected fringe venues, with a fantastic range of programming. The pub does a decent burger, too.

Alexandra Nurseries, a short walk away towards Penge, is a great independent business and the place to go if you would like to buy plants or some posh jams, preserves etc for a gift. Coffee and cake to be had there too, if that's your thing.

The Dolphin and the Golden Lion are both pleasant to drink in, and the former in particular has a great beer garden.

Golden City in the high street does great Chinese food, if not exactly fast. Very tasty though.

As above, Trattoria Raffaele is also great for a meal, and there are some great coffee shops.

And if you find yourself in need of curtain hooks, picture fixings etc, try Musti's Pound Plus in the high street.

Anyway, once again - welcome, and hope you'll be very happy in Sydenham!
